engine electronics fault - engine cuts out
« on: 01 December 2009, 12:08:46 »

The little engine symbol lights up and stays lit, engine cuts out randomly or goes to some sort of limp-mode. Especially cuts out if trying to accelerate any amount. The symbol sometimes goes out again on a restart, but is back after a while.

I did the paperclip test and get a code 10 - repeats 3 times, then a single 1, then 10 three times again and so on.

It's not fun going along the M25, suddenly losing power and having to coast to the hard shoulder across 2 lanes of heavy traffic.

Everything was ok until this fault appeared - no other warning signs that I noticed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies. As this is a 2.0l year 2000, I see it's a four digit code, so I'm getting a code 0100. This is with ignition in position 2.
Is that cam or crank sensor? I can't find a table of codes for the 2.0l.

0100 is MAF (mass airflow) located between airfilter box and throttle housing. Check connector and also check for air leaks round vac pipes. Easy way is to use carb cleaner with engine idling, spray in area of pipes, any noticeable difference in engine, you`ve found a leak :y

Thanks RobG - I'll have to try that tomorrow in daylight so I can see what I'm doing. I don't have carb cleaner - would WD40 or penetrating oil be any use to try what you said?

No. Use aerosol carb cleaner

carb / brake cleaner or damp / easy start will do the job  :y

just make sure the engine is not too hot and don't spray it on the exhaust manifolds  :y

the stuff is flamible  ;)

I wouldn't use "damp start". That forms an insulating film over whatever you spray it on and will probably knacker the sensor for good. I find they don't normally respond to cleaning. :'(

How does that mixture help to check for air leaks round vac pipes? :-? :-? :-/
