Fan belt
« on: 11 December 2009, 00:45:56 »

I'm having a little trouble with my ignition light. The weather hasn't improved so STILL haven't done anything but I'm thinking it's the fan belt because it sounds like it's starting to slip.

Is this an easy job? I was looking at the thermostat postings and what was an easy job on a car I had 3yrs ago seems a nightmare so as the Omega seems a strange car I thought I'd check!  :y

Thanks

Getting "picky" for a second .... no such thing as a "fan" belt on the V6 omega ... all fans are electric  :)

What you are probably refering to is called the "auxiliary belt" ...   drives the air con, alternator, steering pump, water pump.

Now I'm probably wrong .. but if the belt was slipping and causing the alternator to "underspeed" and not charge .. you would have other problems as well .. overheating, heavy steering.

Aux belt change is not difficult, there's no Guide AFAIK .. but a quick read through/search will find several threads with advice in .....  but my first thought would be to check out the alternator ...

Yeah I meant aux. belt. There's always one :P

Slight undercharging but nothing too drastic - there is a squeal (much like a water pump sound) when I start which I've often found is the belt slipping so haven't really had any other symptoms as yet because it isn't bad enough.

Thanks for the advice  :y

Have a look at the belt mate, when they get old they get brittle and crack so do slip.
Open the bonnet and look down at the front of the engine you will see a belt (which everyone used to call the Fanbelt but on these cars is like Entwood said an Auxbelt).
A couple of things need removing to get to the Auxbelt but will only take about half an hour to complete the job.

When mine started making a "screeching" noise it was the tensioner bearing not the belt slipping.

Not difficult to slip the belt off and make sure the tensioner pulley spins nice and freely.

New pulley very cheap and easy to change .. and despite what some dealers say the pulley IS available as a seperate part .. you do NOT have to buy the whole tensioner.

While I think about it .. if you suspect the tensioner bearing .. change it sooner than later ...  I think it was Dad1UK at Newent who had a tensioner bearing go .. it seized and the tension in the belt was such that he was unable to spin the engine to start it ... :(

I did mine yesterday. The pulley was definately the fault.

New one was £25+ or the assembly was £58+ from Vx.

I sure sure there is a proper way to do it. I was cold, lacking the time to remove all the bits and lacking the required Torx bits... So here is the 'improper' way.

1. Remove 15mm pulley retaining nut.
2. Forcibly remove pulley from locating boss. (PING!!!)
3. Slip the belt just off the side of the water pump pulley.
4. Fit new tensioner with the belt over it.
5. Use the spanner on the 15mm nut to 'wind up' the tensioner.
5. Slide the belt back on to the water pump.
6. Enjoy the lack of screeches and rattles...
