Breather Pipes
« on: 17 December 2009, 08:00:40 »

Hope some of you guys could shed some light
Ive had breathers cleaned out but nothing as been done with the plenum how can i tell if it is blocked.
1 if i take one of the large pipes at the back there are 2 large ones a medium one and a small one if i remove one of the large ones i assume one to each bank will i get a vacuum on the plenum hole if there is no vacuum does this mean its blocked as im thinking the man who serviced it for me cleaned the pipes but i dont think he did anything with the plenum sorry for a long thread but it is blowing a bit of oil out of the cam cover bolts on drivers  side he did say he nipped them up but i think that might av made it worse as it should be only 8nm
thanks
robert

If you have oil appearing around the camcovers your gaskets will require replacing ,but only use genuine GM and correct sealant.
The problems start with the breather system getting caked up due to poor servicing ,normally inadequate oil changes at regular intervals and only drving short distances which causes the oil not to reach correct operating temperature.
Bottom line is to clean the entire breather system out, just follow the guide in the maintenance section.
Then remove and replace with new gaskets/o rings and sealant and only tighten the retaining bolts to 8nm(maximum).give the car an oil change and filter and your problems should be resolved...then change the oil atleast every 4k and clean the breathers every 3rd change.
