Quick 2.2 question please!
« on: 26 December 2009, 18:28:52 »

Do the 2.2 Omegas use the same engine as the Vectra that has timing chain problems? I looked at a guide here for cam cover gaskets and it looked like an Ecotech with a timing belt.

The 2.2 Omega units have a cam belt which needs to be replaced every 40k miles or 4 years. The Vectra units as you point out, don't use a cambelt, a chain instead.

very different engines, number of parts are different.

Timing chain issues are caused by poor oil servicing / breather cleaning.

2.2 in the Omega is very reliable, just keep oil changes every 5k max, and oil changes every couple of years.

Anything else I should look out for? It's a 51 plate auto with 140k and it's £800. Seems to run and drive okay but I know zero about these so a few pointers would be very welcome. I know it's a cheapie but don't want to buy a disaster!
First job is belt/tensioner/water pump as per the old Vectra it's replacing....... ;D

There's already a thread about that car...

Or I assume it's the same car?

As with any old car with lots of miles you have to be prepared to roll up your sleeves now and again.

Just generally check the car over, make sure everything works as it should or budget in the cost to fix if it doesn't.

Obviously a faulty transmission or major engine problems should flag up a warning about the car being uneconomical to repair but with 'niggly' faults you can either live with them or perhaps sort them yourself.

Tha Omega is a tough old car and fairly conventional so unless it has major problems it's fairly easy to fix. Read the maintenence guides to get a pointer or two as what may be an issue and look for that on your test drive/inspection.

Just my two-penneth worth.  :y

Look for a good service history, this generally points to a reliable motor. It's neglet that causes most problems.
