Blwer speed controller
« on: 22 December 2009, 18:38:04 »

On my Omega 2.5 with climate control Is the blower speed controller the part called 1 a hedgehog, final stge unit, resistor pack, or 2  a square box in the blower area with about 5 wires attached.I am struggling to decide which to replace as my blower will not turn off even with the ignition off.

Mine's started doing a similar thing, not blowing continuously when the ignition is off but does run on for about 10 seconds after I've turned the ignition off and pulled the key out!!!!

#1 is the housing. #4 is the resistor. #3 is the actual motor
Standard heater

Theres the hedgehog, I presume that will be the item at fault on climate equipped models that makes the fan run on? I'm assuming it is as my old mans merc did the same thing and that was the regulator at fault then. :o

Climate uses the speed regulator with alloy fins, not the open case resistor network.
Usual cause of failure is a blocked drain in the scuttle which lets water into the fan motor and controller so check it and clean out if necessary when fitting the replacement.

As you may remember my blower kept running even with the ignition  off. I have fitted a new regulator Hedghog type part no.90512510 purchased on Ebay(topsolu). And all seems to be well. Probably the most difficult job I have done only because space is limited.Lots of cuts and bruises.

Removed glove box but trying to release the clips which hold the regulator and pull it out at the  same time almost impossible in fact I broke off  the clips and now have to find a way to hold unit in housing

as i said in your other thread i did mine srart to finish in my dinner half hour, them lugs i could see why they could be difficult imho they would of been better if they were part of the hedgehog.try some decent tape with a couple of spots of super glue maybe, someone will come along with a good idea :y

I quite agree I often feel that car designers are trained to make things difficult for DIY repairs.I wonder if the hedgehog has to go in the mounting why not fixed somewhere in that area probably has to be there
to keep it dry. I was suprised how hot  the hedgehog gets when the fan is on

The 'hedgehog' is a heatsink for either a series resistor or simple speed regulator for the blower motor. As you have discovered it generates a lot of heat so it is placed in the airstream to keep it cool.
