tempture gauge problems

my tempture gauge is not working correctly , the tempture gauge does not move whilest the engine is running but when you turn the ignishion on after a run the gauge goes up but when the engine is started the gauge goes back to not working any ideas

If not moving sounds to me as if the stat is not opening .

it does move when the car is not running also it moved slightly when drivig earlyer but then just returned to where it sits when the car is off ???

You can prove that the gauge works by earthing/grounding the wire that should go to the temp sender, the gauge should then go all the way to HOT. If it doesn't I'd check/replace the sender.
