auto gearbox oil change
« on: 21 January 2010, 12:39:05 »

Hello, what is the  recommended mileage covered to expect to change the auto gearbox oil? Also how do you know which type auto gearbox you have?. I have an 01 2.6 MV6 auto with 71,000 miles and am keen to carry out any type of preventative maintenance.

You need a dexron III ATF for the gearbox and we have a few that will be suitable

Fuchs ATF is a good choice and a good price, but if you want the best, go for the Redline D4 or Amsoil ATF. To be honest, I'm not sure what the change interval is with the Omega auto gearboxes.

Cheers

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

Vauxhall say: Automatic transmission oil change is required every 60,000 miles or six years, but only under ‘extreme’ operating conditions i.e. when towing of when using the car as a taxi.

We say: change fluid anyway at 40,000 to 60,000 miles / six years, regardless of operating conditions.

Also, a change of transmission fluid (and either cleaning or replacing the filter) is the first port of call when dealing with ANY sort of automatic transmission problems – you will be surprised how many boxes were revived by this simple measure after having been written-off by main dealers…

Vauxhall own ATF is quite expensive, you can use any good-brand full-synthetic ATF but it MUST be to Dexron III spec.

As shown in FAQ  :y

That's strange, I thought that Vx said no atf changes were necessary. That's why there is no atf change on the service checklists in the service booklet.

That being said, I will be taking my 124k mile car to a garage for an atf & filter change in the next month or so. The box seems to be working ok but I'm sure that the atf in it must be well past its best by now.

I read somewhere, on here I think, change the fluid after 80,000.
GM reckon though it doesn't need changing.

Incidently where is the best place to get the gasket/filter set to do a fluid change on a 03 plate 2.2 box, and how much are they?

Cheers

any tips on how to get all the atf oil out, especially the fluid in the torque convertor and are there any procedures for knowing that all the oil galleries are full after refilling when checking the levels.
