Well, about mid December my 2.5TD started overheating and pressurising all its water out of a faulty (Cracked threads) expansion tank cap.
What with xmas and the like I just laid her up on ramps and used the wifes Audi till funds would permit me to fix her. Always thought it was the head gasket but wanted to try any other possible avenue so replaced the thermostat a couple of days ago, also checked the water pump in case the plastic fins had disintergrated.
Got her up and running again and have done about 60 miles without any issues, but I took the girls to school this morning and the engine was getting a bit warmer than normal (96-97c) but the heater was blowing out cold air. Then it started misfiring at idle and when pulling away. This to me spells out head gasket failure

So, im in a quandry as to what my next move should be.
I used to be a car mechanic, but that was 14 years ago and although I have worked on loads of cars since, inc the HG on my brothers Audi A4 petrol last year, I have never done the HG on a straight six diesel before.
1) Are they a nightmare or pretty straightforward(ish).
2) Are there any specialist tools required to do it?
3) If I am capable of doing it, how much, ball park, will the parts cost and what should I order that maybe I haven't thought about.
4) Is there anywhere on this site with the correct torque settings etc
Another alternative is to get someone else to do it, how much would this be likely to cost me?
Another alternative is to sell it as is, with no MOT (runs out mid Feb). Whats it worth?
And the final alternative is to sell all the bits off it for spares and scrap it.
I am loath to doing the final 2 alternatives because, to be honest, this is the nicest car i've ever had. I bl@@dy love it. I've had 18 grand euroboxes for the past ten years but non have come close to this on just about every count.
Somebody out there, give me some inspiration, PLEASE!!!!!
