Somebody Up There Hates Me!!!!
« on: 29 January 2010, 09:32:56 »

Well, about mid December my 2.5TD started overheating and pressurising all its water out of a faulty (Cracked threads) expansion tank cap.

What with xmas and the like I just laid her up on ramps and used the wifes Audi till funds would permit me to fix her. Always thought it was the head gasket but wanted to try any other possible avenue so replaced the thermostat a couple of days ago, also checked the water pump in case the plastic fins had disintergrated.

Got her up and running again and have done about 60 miles without any issues, but I took the girls to school this morning and the engine was getting a bit warmer than normal (96-97c) but the heater was blowing out cold air. Then it started misfiring at idle and when pulling away. This to me spells out head gasket failure :( :(

So, im in a quandry as to what my next move should be.

I used to be a car mechanic, but that was 14 years ago and although I have worked on loads of cars since, inc the HG on my brothers Audi A4 petrol last year, I have never done the HG on a straight six diesel before.

1) Are they a nightmare or pretty straightforward(ish).

2) Are there any specialist tools required to do it?

3) If I am capable of doing it, how much, ball park, will the parts cost and what should I order that maybe I haven't thought about.

4) Is there anywhere on this site with the correct torque settings etc

Another alternative is to get someone else to do it, how much would this be likely to cost me?

Another alternative is to sell it as is, with no MOT (runs out mid Feb). Whats it worth?

And the final alternative is to sell all the bits off it for spares and scrap it.

I am loath to doing the final 2 alternatives because, to be honest, this is the nicest car i've ever had. I bl@@dy love it. I've had 18 grand euroboxes for the past ten years but non have come close to this on just about every count.

Somebody out there, give me some inspiration, PLEASE!!!!!

Bad luck mate, but I don't think that TB would mind you getting in touch.

I've got all the torque settings here if you PM me your email address.
Also got a '98 TD Estate up for grabs in 'For Sale' section!

I think there's a workshop manual for the Range Rover variant of this engine floating around somewhere.

Don't discount the possibility of a knackered water pump / thermostat (especially as heater was going cold).

Bugger  :'(

I guess take head off, and take it from there.  Locking kit needed - Elite Pete has mine, and a tool to remove tensioner pressure (see pdf file).

Head is rather heavy, and BMW say cannot be skimmed.

Before condemming the HG/Head, after a small run, how much pressure is building up in coolant?

And I'm gutted - I loved that car  :'(

Even Mrs TheBoy, far from the biggest Omega fan, often asks about 'the old girl'

Hi Jaime

With regards to pressure, i took it out yesterday and when i got back i wanted to see if the level had dropped at all. Slowly removed the cap and it just went beserk in there, much more than i would have thought., would more than likely have emptied the water out of the whole system. Screwed the lid back on, went out to it 4 or 5 hours later and it still had quite a bit of pressure built up.
