Oil leak - oil pressure switch ?
« on: 01 February 2010, 20:57:00 »

Hi all,
Is it me - or aren't Omega's happy unless they're leaking something ? :(
Ok - I've seen on another thread that the pressure switch may be vulnerable to leaking. I haven't long had the cam gaskets done etc. (<2k miles) + Oil cooler top plate etc. I now have the tell tale pool of oil on the front of the sump pan - having cleaned around it thoroughly yesterday to try and trace it today - a 70 mile trip this morning replenished the pool quite thoroughly too. Despite the mess everywhere - looked like it was originating from the pressure switch. As far as I'm aware - this hasn't been disturbed since I've had the car (i.e not removed or replaced) - so is it highly likely that the switch component bit is leaking and it's worth starting off with a replacement anyway, or do I take it out and try new seals first ? Is the electrical terminal on the front the weak point for the seal to break on these ?
I assume it's a fairly straightforward job to undo and replace ?

Cheers
Ian.

Are you sure it is coming from the switch?
Have you considered the crank seal?
What steps have you taken to trace the leak?

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

Apart from cleaning thoroughly and inspecting after a run - not a lot else. The area above the switch seemed to still be clear after the short trip - but the switch mounting point on the underside definitely had a trace around it. Is there a more scientific way to eliminate the crank seal and how common is this ? :o

If you are sure it is the presuure switch best thing to do to test it is to wrap a tissue bandage around its top and wait to see it if gets soiled. If it is going to leak it will leak through its plastic cap usually.
Only other way I can think of is to remove the scuttle, plenum, then blank off or bypass all pipes and then run it while you can see the full top end. Migs are notorious for leaks and I have yet to find another car that has so many freekin pipes, joints and possible places for leaks to develop that are hidden from view.
Did it to mine and now it is leak free (for now at least I suppose).

OK - definitely not the pressure switch. Have had it in the air today at the garage. It had a good rinse down, drying off and then left running to see what's occurin'.
Not the switch, Not the cam covers. BUT potential trace from what appears to be the drivers side camshaft seal (between cambelt cover back plate and cam cover area - trace of a drip line visible) which is leaking down behind the alternator. ALSO - but not yet certain a possible weaping seal between sump cover housing and what I assume is the engine block above it - just behind where the pressure switch sits.
Couple of questions if I may:
1. Any special Vx tools required to change the camshaft seals ? the garage I use haven't done one before on this engine.  :o
2. Is it any more tricky than a belt change ? They have done quite a few of these though.  :y
3. Cambelt etc. replaced 2.5k miles ago - will any of this need changing again if it's disturbed. :'(
4. Anything else worth changing whilst this lot is out ? :(

If after this is done I've still got the sump block seal issue - I'll be back  8-).

Cheers

It won't run without the plenum on!

I guess it might be worth checking for oil in the vee of the engine. Maybe this is running down the front of the engine but only when the car is moved. Wrapping the sensor in a bandage / tissue is a good idea to narrow it down.

Thanks everyone for the input here - I'll start a new thread with a different title as I've definitely eliminated the oil pressure switch (b*gger :-[)
Moving up the engine to either camshaft seal or still a dodgy cam cover gasket.. new post to follow with some questions if I may.
Cheers
