The one next to the radiator? It only runs when you've turned your engine off while HOT to circulate hot water around the block to prevent hot spots in the block ... the rad fans will run at the same time.  :y

Will need to investigate because it is a working hearse and we just dont need a breakdown on route!!! Thanks once again Marty

You mean fan or pump?

If fan, check the fuses in the underbonnet ecu box

If its the pump under the coolant expansion tank that looks the same as the one attached to the radiator at the battery, then that is for circulating the hot water around the cabin when the engine is off.  After running the car and switching off, if you press a button on the aircon system (cant remember for sure, think its the a/c one) then that starts the pump and fans and keeps the cabin warm(ish) until the heat in the system is dissapated.

Dont think so Andy.  My mini facelift had the climate pack and the adeditional pump under the header tank - see the fitting cruise howtoo for pics - and it operated the heating if you pressed the 'auto' button after switching off.

Thanks for your help guys, so if am reading right, pump on right next to battery should only come on after engine switched off to help cool system down also can start it manualy via a/c system!!!! I think. Will give it a run tommorow and watch temp then see what happens when I switch it off back at home. Will keep you posted. Thanks Marty

Bear in mind that there are two seperate pumps on the cooling system.  Both do similar but slightly different jobs.  The one at the rad, as I understand it, comes on more often if you have been causing the engine to work hard and the temp is way up when you switch it off.

The other, at the expansion tank, is controlled by the driver in that the aircon switch is pressed after the engine is shut down and this circulates water around the cabin heating system.

Guessing the latter could be handy in your line of work if you are at a graveside 'doo' and have to shut the car down as it will allow you to keep it warm for the passengers/pall bearers....
