Guys !   Educate me please.

Whats the point ?  Say an LPG conversion costs 2k.
I appreaciate that gas is just about half the cost of unleaded BUT with an outlay of 2k initially you've got to do a huge amount of mileage AND keep the car for yonks for it to be worth while in the scheme of things.

2k is fast approaching the cost of the cars to begin with surely.

And surely by the time the cars have reached such high mileages, most of us, sell and buy something newer. I just don't get it ...sorry  !!!

Are there other incentives to go LPG that i don't know of ?

On a brand new, fresh out of the garage car I can understand....suspecting that purchasers are going to keep the cars for at least 10 years or so but on Migs that are at very least 6/7 years old, unless I stand corrected, I just don't see the point..

I converted mine in August 2008 (DIY) and it had paid for itself by Christmas... I've had a year (28k) running about on the cheap stuff

My car's just approaching 152k and is barely run in... In fact, I've had a few OOFers ask for first refusal if I sell

It's worth it financially as long as you'll do more than the payback mileage... And, of course, there's the green issue if it floats your boat as LPG burns much more cleanly

Well based on what you have said I've got the old calculater out and when you look in to it...you have a point. DIY fitting obviously helps but even at 2k and based on the miles I do, it would only take about a year for me to start saving money...Well I never ?

How many miles do u get to a tank of LPG, can you run on LPG solely and does it effect performance.

I get 40p per mile for business miles, doing about 500 per month on average..hmmm gives me something to think about ??

Seems to suggest a £2k conversion could pay for itself in arround 22K miles, in your case approx 2 years.

DIY approx a 1/3 of the cost, so paid for in a 1/3 of the time, so maybe savings are made after 8 months based on your mileage.

I do about 25k/year, I would say that about 24k of that is on LPG. It runs on petrol for about the first mile and a bit, or 3-5 minutes

Car starts on petrol and warms up, then switches to LPG automatically. You hardly notice it TBH

for me I am planning on keeping car 4 a few years, I cannot afford to replace car every couple of years.
Also I am no mechanic and would need to get someone to fit system and I would only be helper -
admit it would be great to learn but still - I would be only of limited help.

I am a train driver so I work shifts and would not be able to get 2 or 3 weekends in a row to do this work -
I could not do without car for that long and if I worked some overtime it would pay for fitting with or 4 days overtime.

Also I am looking at 2 years parts and labour warranty included and hopefully peace of mind

I filled up with petrol during August because we were on the isle of Wight and not close to an LPG station. Used about a quarter of a tank before going back to LPG. I have just this weekend had to put more petrol in. That's 3/4 of a tank in 4 months!

Mine is set to switch over at 20 odd degrees C coolant temperature or 30 seconds running.

I reckon mine's about the same... 3 tanks per year, and thit includes a little petrol running if I miscalculate and run out of LPG

The only problem you've got is there aren't any LPG stations in Felixstowe

But there are a couple of cheap(ish) ones in Ipswich if you go there often enough

I have checked out my area and there are 2 stations that
do lpg in brighton so I can fill up near work.

there are plenty of stations in south west england, wales
so you just have to put lpg into you sat nav to find out if
there are stations near you   (if not then lpg will not be sensible conversion).  
you may find that some normal gas suppliers have lpg pumps and are 4-5p
cheaper than forcourt stations.

Don't know if they still do it but the BP at the bottom of the A23 (Junction with A27) used to do a discount accumulator... 1p per litre off each time you fill (starting at the 2nd fill up) growing to 10p per litre after the 10th

Midlands (stoke/coventry/birminham) and Yorkshire (Huddersfield, Leeds, Sheffield) and South Wales (Cardiff) all seem to me to have far more LPG places, at much cheaper prices than most.

Swidnod, for all its size only has 1 petrol station, 1 calor place (limited hours) and 1 "account only" place. None of the Supermarkets sell it, but in cardiff there are loads of places and, to my intimate knowledge, 2 supermarkets ..

So coverage is, I would say ... "sporadic"
