Ticking from offside engine.
« on: 11 February 2010, 11:47:36 »

My car has developed a bit of a tick from the offside of the engine. Thought at first that it was a wheel-bearing but is audible on idle. Sounds like it is coming from low down, behind the front wheel, if looking at the car side-on. Definitely only on the offside. Increasing with throttle. Less audible in the cabin but still there. Gets a little better when engine warm. Starts to disappear over 3k (but probably because the rest of the engine/exhaust is drowning it out). No noticeable effect on performance.

Wondering if maybe it's the bearing in the water pump? Not exactly sure where that's located though. The car is a '98 3.0 V6.

   Any ideas people?

It could be the exhaust manifold gasket.

Hmmmm.....had it MoT'd in the new year and they added an advisory that the exhaust was blowing somewhere on the N/S, couldn't identify whether gasket, cracked manifold or downpipe. They revved it to 4k to get it through the emmissions  ;D

Will have to double-check the paper work! Would it be noticeable from looking with the bonnet up?

its definatly exhaust manifold gasket and if its on the side near battery its a complete c*nt haynes say remove engine but you can do it without having too, the only pain on the other side is the main water pipe (the metal one) which goes round the back of the block and you will also have to remove the oil cooler feed and return, please remove and not bend them it makes life alot easier.....trust me lol good luck :)
