Car crisis
« on: 18 January 2010, 11:41:40 »

It's crunch time for my car. It hasn't started since well before Christmas - nothing untoward showed itself, no strange noises, nothing, it just wouldn't start one morning. I changed the crank sensor just to eliminate it

To cut a long story short, a garage have sent a mechanic to look at it (in my absence) and declared that it has 'no compression'. Now to me that indicates that the timing belt has either slipped badly or snapped completely. I pulled back the top of the timing belt cover to see if a) the timing belt was 'there' and b) if it was tensioned at all

The belt is definitely on, in good condition and tensioned. Having said that, I could only see the top bit of it. Could the garage (who I've never used before) be just bulls**ting me to get a bit of money?

As I said, there are no untoward noises when trying to start it, I'd expect at least a bit of metal mashing if the belt had gone. Do I book a trip to the scrappy yet?  :(

Only one fault code, 0100 - Maf sensor. I've tried starting it with the MAF unplugged with no success

Going from 'other' cars i have had with no compression, you can hear it has no compression when trying to start it, the engine sounds like it can turn easier. So i would presume you would have noticed something wasnt right.
If you arent happy get a second opinion  8-)

PM JamesV6-CDX, he's in Cardiff some of the time. He'll give you a reliable diagnosis and you can take it from there.

The engine does sound as if it's spinning with not much resistance tbh, I'll see what the garage say next, they're going to pick it up today or tomorrow. I like to be as informed as possible when I deal with unknown garages, which is why I'm asking on the forum. Thanks for the replies  :y

I agree. Get someone to have a look. Compression doesn't just disappear. For compression to fail on all cylinders takes the cam drive to fail and the valves to get bent. It is very likely that you would have noticed this, and it's not something that would have happened while the car was sitting. It would have failed during driving, IMHO.

I'd whip off the cam belt cover and just see where you stand first.

I didn't take the whole cover off tbh, but i saw enough of the belt to know it hadn't snapped and that it wasn't floppy enough to have slipped off a cog somewhere. The car didn't fail whilst driving, it just failed to start one morning. Having said all this though, it does seem to spin quite freely.
The man at the garage told me his mechanic had seen the car and it had 'no compression'. I was absent and I don't know whether tnis means he actually tested each cylinder or whether he was just assuming this from the sound of the engine turning over. I suspect the latter cos I wasn't gone for long. If the belt was out enough to prevent starting I would have expected to hear some kind of noise at some point, but I definitely haven't.

I'll see what they say next and maybe invite a tame oofer down if they're willing and if the engine can be saved.
Thanks for the replies so far

Popped over to Merthyr on Saturday - this beast now roars once more  :y

The garage that charged for "diagnosis" and concluded "no compression" wants burning down.

Took less than ten minutes to resolve before purring nicely.

Any guesses as to what the cause was?

A clue - not crank sensor!

Either a flat battery (which I hope not!) or Fuel Pump relay/fuse?

The coil packs were not  in a good way, and neither are the (non genuine) plugs fitted - but no, not the cause of the problem
