weird issue.... engine stalls, no fault codes
« on: 17 February 2010, 15:32:03 »

it's done it a few times now....   just sitting idling in traffic....  the engine just dies...   sometimes it might run a little rough first, but not by much....  then suddenly cuts out...  just drops dead...   then won;t start  immediately,  just turns over , but shows no sign of "catching" . but eventually, it does after a few minutes...   the last time it did this i drove straight to the garage....   they stuck a tech reader on it but there were no stored fault codes...

any bright ideas.... ???  it's bloody irritating, and embarrassing....  holding up rush hour traffic is not my idea of fun.

all operating parameters within normal bounds, good fuel, normal temperature, plenty of fresh oil,  recently serviced, new cam belt, new exhaust, new cam cover gaskets, new pipe on EGR system,   it's done it before and after all these things....

i'm wondering about HT leads....  since the cam covers needed replacing , (noticed by realising the plug wells were at least part filled with oil ) maybe they could have been affected ??

they tried 3 different readers on it....  no results from any of them...

any thoughts??

Yes check the codes, but it does sound as if the 'crank sensor' is on it's way out.
Good luck

generic readers can be funny, and crank senser can be at fault and not leave a code.

try the paper clip test as listed in maintenance section to read the codes diy. If 19 is present change the crank sensor. Mite be worth cleaning the icv, it cant do any harm, but does not sound like the culprit in this case.

It's classic crank sensor, and you don't always get a code.

If the car re-started immediately, I'd have said look to your MAF, but it's screaming crank sensor from the rooftops!

I had this on a X18XE veccy - was MAF sensor.  Can't remember what the symptom was when the crank sensor failed but agreed it is likely on the V6 to be crank sensor as well

READ THE CODES.....MAF sensor failure on the 2.5 and 3.0 is pretty much unheard of and the symptoms are not correct

MaxV6 - if you're passing (at a time when I'm in), I'll happily read the codes for you.  Catch me in daylight, I might even clean the ICV for you ;D

But you're better off reading codes with either a Vauxhall reader, or a paperclip :y
