As long as the lights are off and you unplug the feed lead can't see a problem  :y Only bit I found tricky was the bolt under the bumper at the bottom of the light.

Go gentle when you remove the light unit as the ballast pack has very sharp edges and will mark the bumper if not carefull

Just leave the HID bulb in the headlight like you would any other bulb  :y

Is the ballast pack the thing at the back of the headlamp? Do I just unplug it and then remove the headlamp? do i need to remove the hid bulb?

Disconnect earth from battery...go and have a cuppa...come back remove the 2 visible screw/bolts from bulk head area...remove grill by side of fog light to reveal "hidden bolt"..then unplug all the connections from back of lamp and withdraw...CAREFULLY....from the car and then do your repairs...as they say..refit is reverse of removal..then connect earth back to battery.

In this guide it looks as though the ballast can remain attached to the HID lamp Omega Headlight Removal

The dangerous high voltages are (should be) confined to the connection between the ballast and lamp.

That said I wouldn't trust anything that involved high voltage, water and motor vehicles because it may leave the factory with effective electrical insulation but there is no guarantee that the insulation is still good after a few years of exposure to water & vibration.

As they said above, battery off & leave for a period before starting work. Even then assume that there is still a capacitor in circuit charged to 80 volts (or much much more if the lamp has failed).

My car is a facelift, and the guide is for a facelift as well.

A torch, a long, thin extension bar and a dollop of grease in the socket works for me.  :y
