Water pump 3.0 v6
« on: 23 February 2010, 16:18:06 »

Anything special I need to know about before replacing my water pump on the x30xe? Liek for example do I take the pulley before or after the main fixing bolts? I cant see a maintenance guide in here for that. please correct me if im wrong! I got my coolant from vaux and the water pump, and im ready to flush the matrix too. do i want to change the thermostat at the same time to save replacing the coolant a second time? im only a 2-3 spanner man so your help is appreciated

You have to remove quite a bit to get at the water pump. The bag pipes at front of engine, plenum if it a 3.0, SAI pipe work, Auxiliary belt after undoing the bolts on the water pump pulley and torques on the power steering pump, remove auxiliary tensioner, remove cable tray and then cam belt cover. Think that just about covers it ;)

Hi
Is it necessary to take the plenum off.  I've just done my cambelt and did not have to remove the plenum for that.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Hi Alan, possibly not. The early 3.0 had a short plenum the same as a 2.5, the plenum from the later mini facelift cars is longer and hangs over the cam belt cover.

It's no secret i very limited knowledge spanner wise but water pumps are usually changed when cambelts are done as mostly the same parts have to removed. Is your cambelt due soon? 40k or 4 years is the rule if i remember rightly.
I could be wrong but might save you some labour or worse later on. Guy. :y

Loosen bolts on water pump pulley before removing aux belt - you will find it easier.  You will need to remove tensioner, water pump pulley, power steering pulley and crank pulley before you can get cam belt cover off to get to the 3 water pump bolts.

Once they are removed you may have to knock 7 shades of sh*t out of pump to get it out - had to do this on the Estate - the saloon came out a bit easier!! ;)

Cam belt cover will come off without removing the crank pulley ;)

Water pump can be changed with the cambelt cover in place, but if the pump is stuck then you are likely to damage the cover when persuading the pump to move.
Also....dont drop any of the bolts
