Hello all

I have just replaced the driver side cam cover gaskets on my Elite and put everything back together.  I only needed to do the driver's side as passenger side appears OK.  Also cleared the breathers and are now all squeaky clean.

The engine fired up first time and eml/TC lights cleared after a few seconds.  I took the car out for a few miles and all appears to be OK apart from a ticking noise that I am sure wasn't there before I started the work.  The noise is noticeable in the cabin but when I stopped, lifted the bonnet, and followed the noise it appears to be the normal clicking of the injectors.  Under the bonnet I would consider the engine to be sounding completely normal however in the cabin the a new ticking noise is definitely present.

The noise appears to be worse under load and is present whether hot or cold.  I am tempted to think that this is the injectors but why would they make more noise?  Could I have seated the lower inlet manifold incorrectly and would this cause a tapping?  I checked to make sure nothing dropped into the top of the engine when the cam covers were off so I'm pretty sure this isn't something to do with the cams or lifters.

I also get a ticking noise, but this was after having had the timing belt changed.

I chanegd the timing belt and tensioners last summer and have had no problems at all

Just done 20 miles and car drives fine. Still getting tapping which almost sound like a buzzing noise.  Most noticeable when accelerating from rest although can hear it in cabin when simply revving stationary motor.  Listening under the bonnet, the engine sound no different than it did before, it's when in the cabin that the new ticking noise can be heard.  Maybe the injectors have simply got noisier?

I didn't know injectors could make a tapping noise, but one possible cause of tapping is low oil, although this doesn't seem to fit your symptoms.
It's worth a quick check on the dipstick though.

My car has a ticking noise when cold, might be the v belt past its sellby date, but when the engine warms up it almost disappears completely, having cam cover resealed/new cam belt/water pump/tensioner/v belt done in April, hope this cures the ticking.  :-/

Check (and probably change) your oil and filter.

A ticking noise can often be exhaust manifold gaskets leaking, and they do often quieten when warm. Can't see how it's related to a cam cover change though. :-/

wynes lifter treatment? are the vac hoses still on? checked the cover for oil leaks, seated proprely? air leak from plunum? fuel lines done up?, nah ignore that one... is tha large vac hose routed correctly, not vibrating on anything like the ac pipe next to the bulk head? err, nope, i'm out of ideas. :-/

I had thought that this might be the exhaust manifold but the car was fine before the cam gasket change.  Thinking about it, I suspect that there may be an air leak although everything does appear to be sealed tight.  I'll just have to take everything back off again next weekend and reseat

I don't believe in coincidences .. so something is not quite put back right IMHO

Check for vac leaks by spraying LIGHTLY with carb cleaner whilst the engine is running, a change in engine note means the cleaner has been sucked in as extra fuel and burned... so you've just found the leak ..

Quick wipe down with paper towel gives you a nice clean engine as well ..
