Fuel low warning light - how much fuel left?
« on: 15 March 2010, 09:34:14 »

I have a GLS Omega V6 so it has a limited onboard info display. When the low fuel light comes on, how much petrol is there left in the tank?
I checked the user manual and though it seems daft, I could not find any mention.

I think around 7 litres or around 1.75 gallons, but not completely sure about this

Approximately 20 miles mate, have been there several times!!! don't do any more than 40mph, and get fuel after 20 miles, cos afterwards you start to suck up all the dross in the bottom of the tank if you are not lucky...........

Thanks for the replies. Probably best to be on the safe side and I will make it a habit to carry a spare gallon in the boot.... :)

It all depends on how hard the car has been driven up to nearly emptying the tank.
When I filled mine the other day, the low fuel light was on (not flashing), but the computer hadn't started to warn me I was on my last 31 miles. I topped it up but only got 65 litres in.  ;)

on mine the fuel light comes on when 30 miles are left in the tank, at 5 miles left the fuel light symbol starts to flash, and trust me its accurate when the display in mine say 0 miles left it isnt lying....!!!!!

Hope this helps

My trip display has been as low as 4 miles remaining. Brimming the tank showed that there must've still been a gallon or so left in there.

Ive driven mine for about five miles with the display reading 0, so perhaps they vary a bit.  :-/

iirc, 8l when fuel light comes on, 2l when it starts flashing.  Really, at point it starts flashing, seriously consider putting fuel in ;D

orange light turns to a flashing light.  if it flashes, dont mess about, fill it up, if its orange for a couple miles, your ok for 5 - 10 miles, but whats the point waiting? u will need fuel anyway, so just keep it topped up.

I had one not had the light on for half a mile. parked it at night club, 2.30 am, im walking to a garage!! wouldnt start.

later that week, another 3.2i estate, same problem, so DO NOT RELY ON FUEL GUAGES!

A thought for you .....

All these cars are around 10 years old or more ... what crud and rubbish is sloshing around in the bottom of the tank ??  I know there's not as much as there used to be with metal tanks .. but IMHO there will still be a load.

If you run the tank close to empty, this crud has far more chance of being picked up and ending up blocking filters or worse.

I know in times of hardship it is a tempting thing to do, but IMHO it is a false economy ...  you have to put the fuel in eventually .. why not put it in 2 gallons earlier ???

Just my thoughts .. nowt else .. :)

If you've ever looked at a fuel gauge sender out of an Omega (or any other car really) closely, you'll get the strong impression that they are hardly precision components. The amount left when the warning comes on could easily vary by a couple of litres or more from one car to the next.

As for the "sucking up crud from the bottom of the tank" thing...
My understanding is that the fuel pickup is at the bottom of the tank all the time, it doesn't float up and down with the fuel level.  So I don't really see how having less fuel in there makes any difference...
