Newbie with variious problems, help requested.
« on: 15 February 2010, 21:01:59 »

Hello All,
Delighted to have found this forum, seems there are many problems but also lots of answers. I have purchased a very cheap 99V 3.0MV6 Auto with 69k its a bit scabby exterior but in fantastic condition interior, there is some history with car.
The car has a major exhaust issue although I cannot see where its blowing so suspect its near the front. The car has a very uneven idle and chugs when under any kind of acceleration having read the forums its the DISP Plugs cam sensor or MAF all of which sound fun any advice on which to do first and how would be much apprecaited.

The most pressing problem as I cannot do anything major till the weekend is that with lights off when pressing brake the front sidelight comes on and with lights on my centre rear brake light stays on, obviously this is the sort of thing mr plod might be tempted to look in to, if there is anyone experienced similiar or knows of a solution that would be great.

I will do a paperclip test at weekend and please excuse my various question early on I will calm down I will also let you know how each problem is fixed. Thanks

Hello and welcome :y :y :y

That's probably an easy fix... Check both the stop/tail bulbs are correctly fitted  :y :y

Sounds like someone may have forced the wrong bulb in ;) ;) It should have offset pins ;) ;)

Either a wrong offset lamp forced home or a bad earth return.  Lamps first, check wiring thereafter....   ;)

With regards to the uneven idle check/clean your ICV (top of plenum right hand side as you look at the engine) to check for faulty maf sensor just unplug the block connector and go for a drive,a yellow engine light will come up on the dashboard when you are driving this is to tell you there is a fault(because you have unplugged the maf) when you plug it back in the light will go back out.The pictures below will help with location

Thank you for your responses, light issue fixed, I took car to Kwik-Fit for exhausst issue it would appear that both Cats have been damaged and the welded causing the rather unpleasant noise and strange tinny noise there cost to fix in excess of £500..happy days.
I sneaked a quick look at spark plugs and to my dismay the two I can access both have oil in them, rewading through the forums this would seem to be very serious if not terminal, as I said before I will have no time till the weekend but will of corse keep you all informed.

Thanks

Have a look in the parts for sale, someone breaking a car will probably be ablr to sort you out a pair of cats cheap.
Oil in plug wells be be the camcover gaskets leaking (which is probably the cause of the rough running) - change the gaskets as per guide, clean breatyhers as per guide (blocked breathers cause gaskets to leak) Change oil and filter and repeat every 4-5000 miles, this helps prevent breathers becoming blocked. :y

PM Loo-knee, I think he has an exhaust lying around, if not he is always getting other cars in so it wouldn't be long until he had one.

Hello,
Don't think I can do the cam gaskets, but wondered if for the short term I should try and clean breathers and pull the spark plugs I can acces to clean oil out or would this make no difference.

Thanks

I would get a second opinion on the cats.
They may be talking 'dangle berries', and I wouldn't buy replacements from KF anyway.  Original second hand would be better - and only if needed.

You can try mopping our the plug wells (try not to drain them in to the cyclinders), but they may well refill quickly.

Several people on here will do the camcover job if you are able to travel to them.

As a relatively new Omega owner I had similar issues with mine. I was convinced it was the DIS, but decided to do the cam cover gaskets and put new plugs in first. Doing the cam covers is a bit fiddly, but if you are methodical and don't rush it is not too difficult. Car now runs absolutely fine.
Endorse the comments about the exhaust (I need to do mine) - see if you can source a 2nd hand one, but for my 3.0 Estate I could get both the cats and the back box new for about £180 if I remember correctly. Looks to be not too difficult to fit - certainly easier than on my Volvo 960. I don't think your problems are as serious or as expensive as you might think!!

All the best,

Mark S.

Thanks, I had a look underneath car and it is clear that the cats have been interfered with, if you know what I mean, just went to Kwik Fit so I could have a look underneath.

I will read through the guides for cam gaskets and give it some more thought.
Cheers

can you post up a pic of the cats - we'll then have a clear view about what has been done.  I wouldn't trust KF at all.....

it could be that someone has just bodged the heat shields on and all is well
