the lights issue sounds like either the switch isnt quite set up properly or the switch is iffy,as for the juddering that does sound like a fault in the g/box as someone else had the same problem & said it was the g/box, but i would get a second opinion to make sure.,,,good luck :y

What colour is the ATF? Has it been replaced at any point?

Fairy lights in third sounds like a dirty selector switch.

my first mig did what yours is doing and it turned out the box was dying high low pressure valve had give up the ghost sometimes flushing 25 liters of dexron 3 through  the  box can cure  it if its no to late. the lights on the selector  shouldnt bother it as  my 2.6 started doing  it put mine in drive all the lights used to light up but  still drove ok change gears as it   should electrical contact cleaner cured that problem

Selector switch still faulty, though not convinced that is causing the juddering...

If the atf has gone dark then its got to be changed.if the car has ever towed then its well overdue,60k recommended .You might, only might, get lucky and your juddering symptoms may dissapear with a good atf change(x3 to get most of the old oil out).I would do that first.
