two easiest ways :-

filling plug should have a plastic bung in it with German wording for "LSD oil only"

if you slowly start moving on full lock in 1st, there'll be a kind of shh shh shh shh noise coming from the rear (window open) as the tyres load and unload

It will only be an LSD if its been swapped.....and sadly, I am yet to see an LSD with the palstic bung either.

The only fool proof way is to pop the back plate off and look at the internals

it's possible to rebuild the diff - i've done five or six.

the bearings aren't cheap tho. the crownwheel carrier support bearings are about £90 each and GM-only.

you can just take a driveshaft out and have a look in the side. two-pin means open diff, four-pin means LSD.

for what it's worth, I reckon about half of the LSDs still have the plastic bung.
