HI

IVE GOT A 2.5 TD AUTO OMEGA BMW ENGINE 1999. THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS THE SUMP PLUG IS LEAKING. I LIVE IN THE BLACK COUNTRY AND I HAVE TRIED TO FIND PLACES THAT CAN HELICOIL IT BUT THEY ARE EITHER UP NORTH AS IN BRADFORD OR DOWN SOUTH AS IN SOUTHHAMPTON. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME A CHEAP CREDIT CRUNCH SOLUTION TO THIS AS I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO PUT A BRAND NEW ONE ON AS I NEARLY FAINTED WHEN THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THE PRICE. I HAVE TRIED TO FIND A SECOND HAND SUMP BUT THERE ARE TOO MANY OMEGA LOVERS OUT THERE AND THEY DO NOT WANT TO LET THEIR CARS GO THE THE CAR CEMITRY. MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE TO WHO EVER CAN GIVE ME A SOLUTION.

The BMW sumps are rubbish, always strip.  You could buy a helicoil kit, but would imagine most engineering firms would be more than willing to do it...

Isn't there the material to tap out to a bigger size?

Yes, but it will fail again.  Do NOT underestimate the crap quality of BMW components. Helicoil is the fix.

It must be bad then if a Helicoil is better. I've never had much faith in Helicoils, they have a tendancy to wind out.

I have tested the 'knock the sump plug out at 80mph' test - Believe me, helicoils are superb ::)

But you weren't trying to unscrew your sump plug at 80 though  ;) :y

What is the thread on the sump plug? I can have a look see if I have a helecoil in my kit to suit ;)

MDTM used a spark plug helicoil kit on my old tractor (now Squealeys), and a Peugeot sump plug (Pugs do a sump plug that is same diameter and thread pitch to spark plugs)

M14 x 1.25mm then ;) I'll have a look when I get back to work :y

Had the same problem, drilled it with a 12mm drill, and fitted an M14 x 1.5 plug. That was about 4 oil changes ago, no further problems.

cant remember what a retapped mine to (before helicoil), but it stripped again after a few oil changes

I used the 12mm drill, rather than the 12.5 before tapping the new thread which allowed a snug interference fit for the new sump plug. :y

Pretty sure they are 1.5.....the 1.25 is a little odd....hence why french cars use it
