Hello,

Left some paperwork in footwell of car today only to find the bag had soaked through, further investigation discovered both front and rear footwells are soaking wet, any ideas to where this could be coming from would be appreciated.

First thing to check is scuttle drains .. especially after all the rain we've had ..

After that it could be sun roof drains (if you have one) or door seals ..

but scuttle is a common problem

Have a look under the bonnet at the scuttle drain its wear the pollen fillter goes bet its all bunged up with leaves and crap.

Worked for me 

Must be pretty bad though if its seeping into the rear as well

If the front is wet enough capilliary action in the carpets will move water front to rear

Just had the same thing with mine but on the drivers side.
It was a seem under the boot just below the rear window on the wing. the boot was wet aswell. so i had to take all carpets and seats out to dry it off.

check to see if the carpet is wet in the boot.

Hi,
Scuttles seem clear, I did have a dampish boot a couple of weeks ago was unsure if it was leak or spillage from shopping etc, it's dry now. The top of the footwell is dry as is the glove box area, any other possible solutions would be apreciated.

Next would be sunroof drain, door seal and maybe the waterproof membrane behind the door card(s)

Other than holes in bodywork thats all I can think of !!

Sun roof drains are in each corner of the sunroof well .. visible when open .... the "drains" are just short metal tubes that connect to plastic pipes that run down behind the pillars, you can easily see the rear one if you open the front doors and look at the base of the centre pillar.

Be VERY careful how you try and clean them as you risk pushing off the plastic tube !!  When mine were blocked - not your problem methinks - I used old-fashioned net curtain wire very very gently until the blockage moved.

I would suggest a small funnel and pour some water down each in turn and see if it comes out of the relevant hole ...

When u say 'the scuttles are clear' have u actually put ur hand all the way down?
Had this with a 98 Elite (soaking wet n/s front/back carpets). So i put my hand all the way down (not easy!) until i got to the drain gromet & wiggled it about till all the water drained.
Trouble was after a few days water filled up again so i eventually  got a thin rod & pushed the bloody thing out & never put it back - never had a repeat of the problem again!

I had the same problem a year or two ago and thanks to advice on this forum found the skuttles and drained out a lot of dirty smelly water - I too removed the rubber grommet at the bottom (by accident) and have never had a problem since.

Make sure you have checked the right place under the bonnet just infront of the windscreen on the passenger side.

  That was good going! I nearly ripped my arm to pieces trying to reach in. In the end I had to use a stick to loosen all the crud, and the vacuum hose to clear it. I still need to properly check the grommet, but at least all the muck is gone.
