Are there any special procedures to be followed for bleeding the fuel system on my 2.2 HDI following a fuel filter change. The hand book suggests there is a 'complicated procedure' if you run out of diesel. Does this apply to a filter change and if so is it a DIY job or are special tools reqd? Thanks Ian.

 i changed my fuel filter the other week,, i found it very tricky to get to, had to remove the air pipes to the turbo and even then was dodgy, vauxhall seem to have modified the filter a little, but it still fits if you use the new sealing rubbers, undo the torx bolt on top and move it to the side drain the fuel if you can ( this should be done by undoing the drain screw if you can get to it) if possible try and have some diesel or injector cleaner in the filter housing before you try and start the car.
the biggest headache is trying to start the car because there is no primer to fill the filter housing up, it can take several minutes to get the engine to fire up, i cranked in  10 second  blasts and when it does start just rev it until all the air is out,,

its best to fill the new filter with diesel before you put it back on the car otherwise it can be a bitch to get it to crank up again!!!

Thanks Omegatoy. Am I right in thinking that you remove the whole filter and housing complete from the mounting cradle once the plug and pipes have been disconnected and then change the element on the bench?  VX advise fitting special tools to the pipes and using another special tool to pull fuel through etc. I assume from what you have said is that you can do the job without by filling the filter bowl before re-fitting it. Am I right? . Thanks Ian

thats how i do it!! howeve once in a while it doesent work and you have to tow the damn thing to get it to suck the diesel up!! however thats pretty rare if the engine is warm when you start doing the job!! it only takes a while to reassemble it all full of fresh diesel and it usually fires straight up but dont make the mistake of starting it and then stopping it straight away!! let it run for at least ten mins to purge the system thouroughly!!

well you can put a can of it in the filter then top it up with diesel, dunno if i would fill the filter completely with dmagic though!!! this is a trick for the 2.5td to clean the injector pump which has a history of gumming up its potentiometer(fbw throttle) cant see it harming anything on a 2.2!!

I have not changed the filter myself but have started the car after filter change. It started just fine, but was admittedly hot at the time.

Recently used Diesel Magic in the tank. Not as they recommend, but by running the thing until it is gasping
( light flashing etc) popping in the DM  at the garage and then putting about 8 quids worth in. It transformed the car, Quieter, smoother, MPG from 38.6 to 44.3 around town and up to 8 mile trips. This measured over nearly 1k miles. Higly recommended on my 140K  car.

Yeh, have recently put DM in the tank as well, as people on here recommend it I thought i'd give it a try.

I fitted one of these hand pumps with a one way valve. It cost about £10 and helps no end after changing the fuel filter
