Noise on cold start up
« on: 06 April 2010, 11:36:50 »

Lots of posts recently regarding engine noises so I will run this by those who know better than me.
On cold start up either from over night or left for several hours, get quite a definite metalic noise from what seems to be the passenger side. When I tried it today I can get it to go very quickly by gently increasing engine revs to 2k and holding for about 10-15 seconds and then noise goes.
I originally suspected a failed manifold or gasket but doubt that would clear so quickly from cold,so could this also be similar to those lengthy threads on followers ??..oil is changed every 4k and that is normally 12 weeks so doubt it is poor maintenance in that dept.
Have tried wynns treatments before but never seemed to make a difference, and with engine now over 150k doubt the financial sense in major works,so just curious regarding long term issues.

manifolds can seal up when hot ime, my old 2.5 used to blow a little til warm.

...or as you say, the dreaded lifter issue.

can you do a recording of so sort?

Chris...my thoughts were manifold wouldn,t seal that quick as noise goes within seconds of increasing engine revs, but only ever from cold.
My ability to record noise would be worse than my ability to fix the noise as most computer issues are totally over my head.
My initial thought was oil not reaching something quick enough on start up...hence the follower possibility...might give the wynns snake oil another go first before start spending out,as car runs perfect and is in daily use driving in excess of 100 miles per day.

Is it defo from the engine itself?? Perhaps its the secondary air injection pump on its way out??

Sounds like a lifter to me. As soon as you raise the revs the oil pressure will increase, which fills the lifter.

Depends on the noise, though:

Lifter is a metallic tapping noise related to engine speed.
Manifold is a deeper chuffing / ticking noise related to engine speed.
SAI pump sounds like a vacuum cleaner, unrelated to engine speed.

EDIT: To say that if it's a lifter and it stops as soon as the engine comes off idle it's nothing to worry about IMHO.

Hi Kevin.
Definitly metalic and stops as soon as engine revs are increased..then when drops back to idle noise has gone so,my thought of follower getting a bit less oil on start up sounds about right...has done it for a while now and only ever from cold start.
