I don't know where it is on a 4 pot, but you're looking for the sensor that has just 1 connection on top, more like the head of a carpet tack or drawing pin, the wire has a femail connector that slides on. If you find it, grounding this terminal should give full deflection on your temp gauge ie show hot. If it doesn't, then it's the temp sensor you need to replace.
NB There are two temp sensors. One talks to the gauge, t'other is used by the ECU & has a square-ish 2 pin connector

The temp sensor is at the back of the cylinder head underneath and slightly to the left of the egr valve.  It's a disc shape and should have a spade connector attached.  It can fall off easily or the wiring could be frayed.  Here's a picture with it out the engine you should get an idea of its position...

Re. the above. I need to change the temp sensor (gauge). Haynes book says just remove intake plenum (upper manifold), TIS says roughly the same but might need to remove drip shield / wiper motor. Has anyone who's done this got any advice before I start?

It is best to take the plemium off, and the inlet manifold on the V6 for easy access to the spad connector/ temp sensor sited on top, at the rear, of the block.  Although it is not necessary to take the wiper motor out, you should remove the wipers and scuttle for ease of access. ;) ;)

That's my experience anyway! ;) ;)
