2.5TD Charge air pipe?
« on: 18 March 2010, 16:41:00 »

Hi guys, i seem to have a small oil leak coming from a bit of black plastic piping that i think is called the charge air pipe. Its connected to a large plastic bit with Turbo Diesel written on it. I have tightened the clips with a screw driver but i could only tighten them a little bit so they must have been pretty tight to start off with. I there anything i can do if i cant tighten it anymore but it still leaks. Also im going to do an oil change soon and ive heard about taking somthing off and giving it a good clean. Can anybody give me a step by step guide as to what i should be doing with regards to maintaining other parts of the engine oil system such as removing somthing, cleaning it and then putting it back again, dont need help with actually changing the oil itself.

Thanks in advance

I actually had new clips fitted to mine.
It's a very short rubber hose I believe not plastic.
I was getting oil spraying over the front of the engine and alternator.
Others will be along to tell you more maybe on this subject.
But what I do is remove all of the charge pipe (black plastic with Turbo diesel on it)  and clean it out, when I change the oil, around at least every 4,500 miles on these engines, sooner if you can :y

The root-cause of this is oil mist blown from the turbo which tends to accumulate in the charge air pipe/EGR valve.

Although this is undesirable, it's often characteristic of many turbo-diesel engines.
The BMW M51D is unfortunately no exception to this.

It sounds like yours really needs to have the connecting hose (charge-air pipe to EGR valve) changed, as they tend to lose their suppleness. Available from Vx at approx £15 inc. Part number is 90467872.

The charge-air pipe is held by 2 x M6 (I think) Allen bolts, plus jubilee clips.

The 2.5TDs that I maintain get this pipe removed and cleaned-out at every 2500-mile oil/filter-change, along with cleaning-out the EGR valve at the same time. You could give them a gentle spray with Gunk or similar, and then wrap a rag around a screwdriver to clean them out.

Prevention being as good as a cure!

If its that bad, probably a sign of poor servicing at some point in its life - remember, the oil change interval is 4.5k MAX on these engines (3k is more suitable), and most people ignored that.

The diesel particulates left over from combustion get carried away in the oil, and make it 'abrashive', and the turbo spin at several 10,000s rpm.

So, the oil in the, now worn, turbo bearings ends up in the intake system.

Just clean it out regularly (carb cleaner).  BUT really keep on top of the servicing, as if the turbo wears exessively, enough oil mist gets in the intake, that the car will run (and rev uncontrollably) without fuel, so you can't turn it off. Then it will self destruct.

I've seen this happen, though not on a 2.5TD.
Not a pretty sight .........

Indeed, I had last year the same problem. My 2.2 dti ran on oil @ 6000 rpms, resulting in 1 melted piston, created enough pressure destroying the radiator coloumns, alternator regulating voltage relay, and many others. Total cost aprox. 3000 Euros. Thanks God I was stopped at the traffic light (but I wasn't thinking in my mind that if I putting in the 5-th gear the engine would stop - maybe the SHOCK!). So be very carefoul!

I also had this problem with excess oil. I then realised (on reading the driver's manual) that I was overfilling the car with oil as I was checking it with the engine cold. You meant to check when the engine is at operating temperature.

That's exactly how you should check the oil level. :y
