Hi,

I'm a bit confused by talk of whats needed to undo the cannister type oil filter holder on a '99 V6. Talk of an allen key and socket I've seen.

If I have a 27mm socket is that a guarantee that I'll get it undone?

Any idea of the torque setting to do it up, I suspect it isn't too tight.

Right - on the ally can type, there's a "nut" cast in the lid. you can use a 27mm spanner on it. Alternatively, some 9if not all) of them have the nut and inside it, an hex cut into it for an allen key - 8mm?
If neither of these work (like they didn't for mine), then a chain or strap wrench should do the trick, but this could well knacker the casing up, so either get another in case, or go down the chuckaway filter route, details in the 'How To' section - this is what I did, and works a treat!

27 mm = 22 mm
8mm Allen key = 3/8" drive socket drive
15lbs/ft = 15 Nm

Although I think I've quoted 22mm cos someone said it was but someone else says 24mm & I ain't going back outside to check!

I wouldn't use the 3/8 drive option though. If the caps been over tightened it has a tendancy to crack and unless you have a spare knocking about, your stuck in deep doo doo

Definitely 24mm, I use a socket on a 18 inch breaker bar to reach and it saves me bashing or burning my knuckles on the pre-cats when changing the oil (5 week intervals as I do 1000 miles a week!) Never had a problem, BUT, I do NOT overtighten the cap of the canister, and use a short ratchet to tighten it up and no more than hand tight and about as much pressure as a handshake on the ratchet, pulling against the steering arm (gentle squeeze).
Go steady and you will be fine, advise against the 3/8 square drive as well, this is a cast ally case and will just disintegrate if it's already too tight and won't budge, I'd go for a strap wrench around the body of the cannister and a socket on a breaker bar, and a firm tap or two to release the end cap.

The cap is cast, and fairly brittle. I too would advise against using a 3/8" drive wrench in the end.  Not so bad if it was done properly last time, but often these are done up by idiots who lack the ability to read.

The 3/8ths socket ratchet drive has undone mine on numerous occasions, as I have not got a 22.5mm socket in my sets.

However when I was working on another members 2003 2.6 V6 the canistor did not have the internal nut shape in the lid, and I discovered a 15/16ths socket fits perfectly on the external 'nut' on the 'lid'.

24mm on mine but they seem to fit a range of sizes. If you don't hold the body of the canister still while taking the cap off the whole body come loose and then you need the 12mm allen key. However, the size varies there too.

Oh yeah, and the cap has a rubber sealing ring. When you do it up you can see when the cap is all the way on (oil tight well before this) and so I stop as soon as it reaches the last twist. Never had a leak to date and comes off easily next time.
