The small plastic guide, size of a penny, where the gear stick joins the gear box has disintegrated making it difficult, but not
impossible to select gears.This guide is accessible just by removing gear lever cover. Seems as if it has to be replaced from below which could be a lot of hassle or is there a simple way of doing a temporary fix.

I didn't get a reply so I will try to clarify.
The plastic bush which allows the gears to select easily has disintegrated, making gear change tricky.
The bush is visible at the bottom of the gear stick, but it seems it can only be changed from underneath the car, and a lot of hassle.
Has anyone any bright ideas?

Assuming you have a manual gearbox ..... the Haynes manual says you have sort it out from under the car.

oh dear, yes it must be a manual form the desciption,
get car up in the air ramps and jack enough for you to have working room,
look up at the lever position, you will see a clevis pin with 2 clips on it remove the clips and slide out the clevis pin, this has now disconnected the lever form the box, and you can remove it from inside the car, get back under, you will see 4 small bolts 10mm from memory but could be smaller 8mm cant remember,
undo these and 2 small plates will come off with them, these hold the plastic ring in, you will find it broken, buy new one before you start!! edit there are small nuts onj the top of the bolts inside the car so you will need assistant to hold them !!

edit again the plates may be inside the car!! so long since ive done it!! but either way you have to undo the small bolts from underneath!!

Thanks for the advice guys. Look likes there's no short cut.
The Omega 2.5 diesel has done 230k miles, still going strong so I guess i can't complain if the odd bit drops off!
