I might be inclined to disconnect the MAF and see if your rough starting dissapears. Won't cost you anything and if it makes no difference then you know one thing it's not IMHO

Well my daughter said " dad it's the pink one you fool  :o ) so i need to go get some torx heads ( bought the sockets last year ) and give the egr a good clean !
Also gonna change the fuel filter aswell as when putting demand on the engine it is lacking something  :-/

Hi All,
well i took the egr off and blocked the hole with foil and bolted back on but this made no difference to the rough running  :-[ so i am presuming it is not the egr unit at fault :'(
It 's still running fine when cold but rough when hot so thinking it must be a sensor somewhere  :-/ :-/
wondering if anything would show up on a tech 2 diagnostics ?
If anyone might be passing with one i would rather pay someone from here than take it to the stealers for the old " must be the headgasket routine !!" 8-)

Any more suggestions gratefully recieved  :) :)
Thanks Gav

so we have moved on from an aparent random missfire? are we saying its consistently running fine when cold, and runs rough at a certain consistent point when warmed up?

if so, and i'm a little vague on this open/closed loop stuff, if the ecu is seeing a cold engine when its hot, then it wont run right and will splutter, hence check temp sensor as a start.

Hi All, Me Again :-[

Well the car is running rough all the time now but decided to check the temp sensor as suggested and replaced it when i realised how much i had to do to get to it :o :o put back together again and........... Still running rough..  :( :(

Then decided to do another paper-clip test(with engine running) and got all these codes:

71  Intake Air Temperature Voltage High
73   Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage Low
74   Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage High
129   Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Feedback Voltage Low
33   Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Voltage Low
21   Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Voltage High
57   Idle Air Control Voltage Low

Now I really am worried  :o :o

I'm starting to think the ECU may be on it's way out :'( :'(

Any suggestions gratefully received  :y :y

check all the connections again.. dont leave any socket empty ..all these devices cant be faulty at a time..

imho will be more simple to have a tech 2 session..

as these codes can be cleared and re-checked ..

All checked and connected  :y
distress flare sent to TB
This couldn't be as simple as a fuse or similar ???

apart from those codes, there can be several reasons

which may cause rough running.. first have this

session..  :y

Gav, just to clarify, when you removed the EGR valve, you said you  blocked off the flange with foil? and then bolted it back on again?? does this mean you put tinfoil or similar in the hole & then replaced the valve on top of it, or did you blank off the EGR Flange and just fix the EGR valve by one of its bolts with the electrical connector still fitted? :y

Hi philrich,
I took the top part of the egr of (2 small bolts) laid folded silver foil over the 2 holes between the 2 bolt holes then re fitted the egr as it should be with the foil in between and reconnected the connector.......
Does this help ?  :y :y
