Rough starting / Rough running
« on: 24 April 2010, 09:20:22 »

Hi All,
Recently when starting the car it starts roughly and then splutters and conks out  :-/ then on the second attempt it starts perfectly :-?
Also yesterday when driving back from my mates it was running as though it was missing at least 1 cylinder  :-[ and also noticed an eggy type smell coming somewhere from the car :o
Went out this morning and the car started fine and i drove up the road and back and all seems good  :-/
I have done the paper clip test and got code 135 and the usual 12 & 31.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on ?
All help much appreciated :)
Thanks Gav :y

135   Telltale (Checklight) Voltage Low

Can't see that causing any running issues, pop the leads out, any water/oil in the plug wells? You loosing any coolant?

I would suggest that checking HT side is a good starting point :y

The 'egg' smell is unburnt fuel in your CAT, you could do with driving the car least as possible in my opinion until you have sorted your missing as CAT's are rather expensive.
If you think its firing on 5 go with the cheapest first a set of spark plugs then go from there.

Well had a poke about under the bonnet checked 2 of the ht leads no oil ( changed rocker gaskets last year and new bosch plugs)
checked water and this was a little low topped up with about 3/4 of a pint.
went for a spin was running fine when cold but once upto temp the missfire started again :(
Am thinking this could be a water issue, if so what would this be ?  :-/

No signs of outside water loss. checked all connections but to be sure where is the temp sensor connection ?
car runing lumpy on tick over but if i hold her on 2000 revs seems to be running fine it's just when i initally rev up it splutters a bit, and when driving ie under load  :-[

block your egr
check your injector sockets and clean them

if its a sensor problem (likely)
its hard to test it as it will give voltage readings even when hot anyway.. :-/

Just been fiddling with the air sensors..... when i unplug the small top one the tickover improves slightly also tried unplugging the larger one underneath this also makes a difference but misfire still there when driving  :(

Thanks for your help so far guys but still haven't solved this, disconnected the EGR but this did not make any difference to anything !
If it is a sensor problem how many sensors are there? :-/ :-/
And are the injector sockets the 2 big fuel pipes on the drivers side ?
This is definitely an issue when the engine is hot  :-/
Also will hold revs cleanly when stationary but will misfire when accelerating during driving  :-/

Thanks Gav

do not disconnect egr, just block it with a metal layer (cut from a coke can or similiar)..

injector sockets are behind the plenum if I remember correctly.. dust and dirt fill in them and effect.. you can clean them with brake pad cleaner or similiar..
