Best plugs for LPG?
« on: 29 April 2010, 02:11:08 »

Hi.
A couple of weeks ago I bought a 2001 2.2 CD saloon, manual, and LPG converted  ;)
I was told by the previous owner that the LPG tank was full but wasn't working (running fine on petrol though) so I paid accordingly (as if the LPG system wasn't fitted)
The gas/petrol switch inside was showing 4 green LEDs so I too presumed the tank was full and tried to switch it over... it switched over ok but quite obviously was getting no fuel through and would again work fine when switched back to petrol. So with this being the first LPG car I've had I set about learning all that I could about it to help me pinpoint the problem...
A couple of days ago I removed the cover over the multi-valve on the tank to check the operation of the solenoid and  there I spotted another gauge, this one however was showing empty....   ;D
A trip to the garage and 3 quid of LPG later it switched over to gas and ran... Lesson learned there was never to trust a switch that tells you your tank is full....  ::)
Now, although it is running on gas it does have a misfire which isn't present when running on petrol (yet it will idle ok at around 750 rpm) so I reckon my first thing to do is give it some nice new plugs to see if that cures it (fingers crossed).
Can anyone please recommend a set of plugs that doesn't cost the earth that are suitable for a 2.2 on LPG.... :y

Cheers

I have just put ngk iridium ones in mine and it now runs a lot better on gas, but i still have a flat spot around 1000 rpm, I think this is because the breather for the vapouriser is attached to the servo pipe and not getting a constant suction when i am braking etc. I am running a seperate feed to plenum at weekend. I will let you know the outcome. hope this helps :)

From what I have seen on here there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the normal Vx ones iirc :y

Very true, no problems what so ever on LPG for me for normal running, was spanking it back last night no issues.

Thats on standard GM Twin electrode spark plugs that cost about £1.20 each and have done 20k!

Normal GM plugs are fine (I use quad electrode but twins are also fine).

I have also found that a vacuum reference for the vapouriser can be taken from the servo hose with no issues. :-/

Quad Gm plugs here, no issues. Does sound like ignition in my limited experience.

Also re the gauge, the software needs setting up by the sound of it. On the stag kits we have on here, there is an option to reverse and alter the resistance values depending on which tank valve and tank size you have. Should be able to get it working, assuming yours kit is similar. :y

Hi all, thanks for the replies  :y

It seems it's GM ones to go for then (especially at £1.20 each... hehe. They that price over the counter at VX dealers?)

My tank is an 80 ltr Icom, so I presume the valve is Icom too, and from what I've found out that company no longer exists... lovely...  but hopefully all seems well at that end.

Under the bonnet is an AEB Pitagora emulator and an AEB OBDII, can't see anything other than Autogas on the vapouriser, not even by taking pics on my phone from as close as practical to it because it's in such an awkward place.

Dates that I can see on things is 2001 so it seems this was converted virtually from new though obviously not a factory job.

Not found any filters to clean as yet but am still searching, got to be there somewhere...  ::)

Cheers,

;D A tenner for the four still sounds good, especially if it sorts the problem.
I'll more than likely have to do the rocker cover gasket at the same time cos it is leaking slightly at the rear corner, knowing my luck the plug wells will be full... Only just done the one on my Vectra too... tut....   (Anyone want to buy a Vectra estate? hehe)

With LPG,

do you have to have the filler port fitted to the out side of the car or can you have that fitted inside the boot as well??

Another vote for GM here, twins in my case.

Ploppy - has to be outside I believe, but few options to 'hide' it ;)

No. It must be outside the car. They do leak a small amount of LPG in  operation, which could pool in the car - and will make it smell like rotten onions. ;)
