Aircon regassed
« on: 07 May 2010, 14:29:09 »

Just got back from having my aircon regassed and serviced by Nick at CoolCar in Reading. Really efficient service, he talks you through everything he's doing explaining it all as he goes and hes very thurough. Found that the HP service valve has a tiny intermitent leak which he managed to seal, he advised that a new valve would be needed next time it's regassed but other than that all is fine again and nice and cold   :y

I would definately recommend a visit if you need your aircon reggased or serviced.

As I understood it, the 'dustcap' is the primary seal, and the ball valve being a secondary seal?  :-/

Cos that's what Mark said  ;). But if you think about it, it has to be the other way round  :y  :y ie if the seal /dust cap is the primary & you removed it you'd lose your all your gas. Think tyre valve, the cap is the seconday ie you can manage without it, but the shrader holds most of the air without it.  ;)  ;)

Looking at the price list and what you get for your money, more expensive than most.

Everyone around here is charging a lot more than that just for a regas/top-up and nothing else, and most of them i wouldn't trust to put air in a tyre let alone anything this involved

The valve has stopped leaking but it took a bit of fiddling to get it to seal so i've ordered a new one from Bellingers ready for next time  :y

vauxhall quoted 70 quid for the hp valve last time, so used one off an old broken car.
it is the valve that seals it, and the dust cap stops shyte getting into the valve area, keeping it clean and un contaminated for next service.

Which is the HP valve? At the front or the shrader type on top of the engine? The one shown in the picture was less tha £5 from Vauxhall. (I posted the part number ages ago for Daz .... but no idea where now  ::):y

Just ordered one from Bellingers and it cost £5.15 +VAT comes to £6.05inc  part number 54258177  and the part number for the cap is 52458768 and costs £3.55 + VAT and comes to £4.17inc

The one at the top is just a short type Schrader valve the same as fitted to wheelbarrow tyres and costs £0.75

£50 is a good price if he did the full bacteria flush and leak test as well as re-gas with anti-fungal. I paid £75 over two years ago at a localish garage for the full works and it was brilliant. I returned to the same garage about four months ago for just a £40 re-gas/top-up check and now regret it. My car smells of cow crap when I have been on a run and my mate reckons they were doing it cheap to offload the old freon (or whatever it is called) and getting ready for the new stuff. My mates garage now does aircon (haven't asked how much yet) so when I have it re-done soon I will make sure that it gets the anti-fungal anti-bacteria treatment this time so that my car doesn't smell like a barn everytime I get out of it.
