just spent 6 hours...
« on: 31 December 2007, 16:23:58 »

taking the car apart to do the cam gaskets,  and i haven't even finished yet :o

took about an hour and half just to get the scuttle and plenum off.

some pics..

i've managed to strip it all down, clean the breather system, clean the throttle bodies and clean down the faces ready for the gaskets.

the plug wells were all full of oil so spent a bit of time get all that out.

did have a lot of help of the missus aswell :-*

you lot make it look so bloody easy ::)

You look pretty happy after spending 6 hours at it. Looks like you're enjoying yourself though.  :y

yeah i'm quite confident, the guide off here is a big help aswell.

the breathers were practically clear apart from the tiny hole in the breather box which was solid.

Good job though......get those throttle buterflies nice and clean and use a clothes peg to jam the throttle linkage whilst they are open as it makes it much easier......you might find the wives oven cleaner works better at getting the crudd off the butterflies....or paint stripper.

Its a good move taking the pictures.....they might be useful to refer to for re-assembly.

It takes me about 2.5 hours to do cam covers with cleaning (sometimes longer if things are very grubby) so your doing pretty well for a first time.

The internals look pretty clean which is always a good sign....and the cam lobe condition sudgests its had reasonale oil change intervals.

Also, whilst you have it in that condition.....give the EGR corrugated pipe a wiggle....if its loose tighten it up at the manifold end with a 24mm spanner.

ha ha, the missus got my bad side ;D

i was just celebrating getting the thing off, harder than it looks.

any ideas on how to get the last dregs out of the plug wells?

the turkey baster's too fat to go all the way in and i've soaked up most of it with kitchen roll.

Once most of its out I pop the plugs out and insert a piece of kitchen role on the end of a screwdriver and rotate it a few times.....its a good time to change the plugs if they havnt been done for some time.

You get a very small amount of oil in the bores but, it wont hurt as there is very little of it.....it will smoke a little when first started but soon clears.

that's the main reason why we took pics as i might get a bit stuck putting it back together.

good idea with the clothes peg, i just held them open and scrubbed with a tooth brush.

i think whoever did them last only changed one side as the leaking side had hard brittle gaskets and the other side was still quite soft.

What state were the breathers in?

Did you give the idle valve a good clean whilst there?

i've got a garage receipt from january saying the plugs, oil, filter and brake fluid were all changed and the cars done about 4000.

they were suprisingly clear, the pipes and the box on top of the plenum. i cleaned them out anyway and i'll do the icv aswell tommorrow.

the little brass pipe on the breather box was solid thoug, i used a pin to clear that with.
