Breather pipes and Emissions

Just skimming through the Haynes Manual I saw some mention that there are breather pipes coming from the inlet manifold that affect and control emissions, are these worth chasing down?
My car struggles (usually fails) to pass the MOT due to emissions.

Have a look here, an excellent guide by Grumpy.  I'm only aware of the one breather pipe going into the inlet manifold directly, and this is covered in the link:
