Oh dear...another dead Omega
« on: 28 December 2007, 11:15:48 »

A good friend of mine, not on this forum, has had his cambelt break  :'(. He has given me first refusal on the car as he is going to scrap it.

If I bought it off him, what could be the very worse case senario for the engine? Could the pistons be damaged? If so, how big a job is that? I know it will need new heads/valves etc which I can do, but is it worth tackling if the damage is too much?

If I don't buy it from him, he said that I can strip what I want off it first before he scraps it.

It's a "R" reg CDX with black leather interior. The odd spot of rust, but generally well looked after.

So, whatcha recon? Is it worth it? He only wants £100 for it.

if you have space to break it, there is a lot of money in that.

If you want to fix, its likely just a set of heads will suffice.

More money in breaking it - lots of bits that will sell easily. Even things you may not think of ( ive just sold some dash buttons from a cdx i broke nearly a year ago!!)

As a fixer, as TB mentions your looking at a head rebuild or more likely new heads, and of course new belt / tensioners ( may as well do water pump too) so the price will rise and rise as a fixer....

I think I'd rather fix it...my drive is already a bit congested. I agree though, there is more money in breaking it.

I'll have a chat with my bud when I see him next and strike a deal  :)

As TB said, replacement heads is best option, because you may have as many as 16-24 bent valves and these are expensive.

But there is also the chance of lower-end damage resulting in piston/rings/connecting rods damage etc, in which case a second-hand engine is best bet.

If you are certain that you don't want to break it in spite of it bringing in more money than the car is worth, then is all down to what you discover when you start striping it down. But be prepared for worst-case scenario i.e. complete engine needed.

UPDATE!

I haven't personally seen the car since it died. Buy I had a phone call from my mate today. He tried to start it again. Apparently, it ran (badly) for about 5 seconds before dying again.

Could this be something else then?

not the cambelt broke then but it might have jumped a tooth or 2.

personally i wouldn't start it again untill he knows what exactly is wrong, could be as simple as a sensor.

is the em light on?
