Autobox clunk
« on: 08 June 2010, 19:13:11 »

Seem to have a bit of a "shunt" when changing up going round a right hand corner only, bit strange but first thought is low fluid level?

First sensible thing is to change the fluid and filter but I can't see a guide anywhere, is there one ?

Been a while since I did one on the car but here's a quick from memory how too.
It's pretty straight forward tbh, jack up or raise on ramps.
Drain as much fluid as you can by removing the filler plug then undo the bolts around each of the gearbox sumps. To remove each sump try gently supporting it with a trolley jack and tapping around as best you can with a rubber mallet to break the seal. You WILL get showered in old ATF so some cardboard under the gearbox will help you cleaning up afterwards.
Drop the sumps off one at a time and dispose of the old fluid.
Check the small sump doesn't contain bits of thrust washer as that's where they end up if it has disintegrated.
Assuming all is well you can start to remove the old bits of gasket from the gearbox faces and both sump pans then generally get them clean including the metallic fur from the doughnut shaped magnet stuck in the big sump pan.
It sticks to the pan around a dimple in the base and can then be pulled off and cleaned with a rag.
Undo the 3 bolts on the filter and replace the filter or wash it out in paraffin.

This is what it looks like with the filter removed.

Replace the sumps using new gaskets and a drop of thread lock on the bolts ( I believe liquid gasket can be used sucessfully as an alternative) and start to refill with ATF.
Now start the car and continue filling till ATF runs out of the filler.
Run the gear selector through all positions and with the car level recheck the ATF and tighten up the filler plug.

Give the car a short run round the block then check the level again, tighten the plug and you're done.
You may want to fit a new/re annealled copper washer on the plug. I don't usually but best practice would be to do so.

The next step will be to have about 3 or 4 showers to get the ATF out of your hair ( washing up liquid is often recommended for this) and clean up the oil slick you've created outside the house.

Tigtening Torques

Fluid filter retaining bolts 20Nm 15lbf ft
Sump retaining bolts  12Nm 9lbf ft
Fluid level plug  33Nm 24lbf ft

Parts are usually sourced from the chap who advertises in  Straight Six News or the forum have a discount deal set up with jpat ( see the sticky in the guide section for details) and along with the filter and both sump gaskets you will need up to 8.4 litres of Dextron 3 ATF depending how much you get out of the system. I usually buy 2 of the 5 litre cans to be on the safe side the remainder coming in for top ups etc.

As you can see the last one I did didn't involve any of the crawling under the car and wallowing in ATF, anyway I have a Gnome for stuff like that nowadays.
