Advice in looking at a car for sale
« on: 09 June 2010, 21:23:07 »

OK we have all the obvious but anything particularly to look out for on a 2.2CD. Auto, of course.  80K miles. FSH Body is mint as is the interior except from some slight damage to the drivers door pocket, looks like a small hole and a bit of the furry bit missing. They are going to do the cam belt and tensioners, engine sounds fine car not yet driven.... :)

I had a 2.2 for 15 months or so;
The water pump is driven by the cambelt, that must also be replaced. The 2.2 HG's are more likely to go than that of the V6's. This is due to poor servicing. Check the colour of the coolant, if it's blue not a great sign, if it's red/pink then that's a good thing.
Start it from cold and see if you can hear anything from the exhaust manifold bit, a fair few 2.2's have broken studs or need replacement manifold gaskets etc.
My 2.2 was excellent in the time I had it, it needed nothing but normal service items. Can't really think of much else above the normal any vehicle check you'd do.

Thanks for that. I did try to sould like I knew what I was talking about ::) which I do mostly, we got talking about cam belts, the guy talking to me had just done is Vectra V6 and he mentioned that garages often do not do the tensioners which he said is important as these can go wrong and cause problems. I have to say I was impressed by their apparent honesty, it is a garage and not just a second hand car lot..... :y

I see what Josh is getting at, but the fact it might be blue only shows that it doesn't have pink/red antifreeze in. You could have just changed it & put blue in  :y  :y  :y
