Mines a mini facelift (2000 year) but on mine there are two screws at the bottom just where it starts to curl underneath a bit - they are right at the outside edges, unscrew these and then (mine) just drops down as the top is held with plastic hooks that are part of the backing.  Hope this helps.  Obviously it is better to wind the seat fully forward, but I guess you cant as it's this thats broken.  Push the seat forward though to give you more room sitting behind.  Hope this helps.  Remember mine is a mini facelift model.

I have taken it off, found the clear plastic huck had snaped off, so had to drill to holes in what was left and put 2 screws in to hold in place so now the back rest is working now, so job done, also found that the passenger seat relise was stuck so fixed that to, all in all a good day :y
