3.0 V6 issues
« on: 13 June 2010, 22:39:43 »

Just purchased an elite that has a few issues to start with, but with near 12 months mot and for what I paid why the hell not.

Initial problem is its down on power and blowing. It is definitely leaking on the passenger side mani, and possibly the drivers side too.
I have read these are difficult but I'm willing to give it a shot when I get chance.
One query is, the power loss, it certainly doesn't feel as quick as it should. Granted Im used to faster motors but its certainly down. Would a bad leak cause a substantial loss.
Heads seem good, waters clean, oils clean, no smoke, idles spots on, cant notice any misfires or dropped cylinders, no sump pressurisation or expansion tank issues so?

The other is weight, my god she is a fat lady :o, I didnt realise how chubby till after I bought her.
How many pounds of flesh can I realistically dump off her if I go to town, anyone actually tried it?
She wont be a daily either so comforts not so important :D

Dunno if you're dollydrifter on mig, but in case not I'll post the same as I did there:

For what it's worth, my Cavalier lost all its carpets, soundproofing, interior trims (except front door cards - gotta have something to rest your elbow on ;) ), seats, spare wheel, sunroof etc, and it added up to about 140kg. Replacing the front seats with bucket seats saved about 10kg.

So yeah, it was like losing a fat passenger, and improved the handling noticeably. Obviously you're gonna see power to weight gains there too. I imagine you've got a lot more crap to lose from the interior of an Omega than a Cavalier.

Removing the sunroof was one of the biggest improvements. It was the heaviest single thing in the car. Yes, heavier than any of the seats or spare wheel - and it's on the roof!

I've recently weighed an MV6 and it was 1600kgs, which wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting.

how much you lose will depend on how keen you are. It would be relatively easy to lose, say 250kgs, but thereafter quite hard. Don't forget that the weight bias is important, too - so don't just bin it all from the rear.

I do have a mate who built a Mercedes S-class trackday car, he managed to shed over 1000kgs from that, but that involved such extremes as removing the dash and ty-rapping the switches in place and removing all of the rear door internals and gluing the doors shut.

Nope not dolly :).

250 may be enough, possibly a bit more. And not too worried about lightening the back end up, may help what Im after.

Just need to crack on and check the engine when I get chance :y
