Engine just cuts out
« on: 28 June 2010, 09:24:28 »

Hi/

New to this forum, so hi to all. I have a 2.5 V6CDX estate 1998 with only 71,000 on the clock. I have done the usual and replaced the rocker gaskets, and routine maintenance. The problem i have is the engine turns over and runs fine, but for some reason it just cuts out, it can also prove very hard to start up again.

Any ideas?

Many Thanks,
Regards,
Jamie

Welcome to the forum.

Have a read here ... paperclip test ... post up your results .

I would not be surprised if you get a code 19 - crank sensor ... :)

Easy enough to change if you do .. :)

There are 2 sorts of code .. active and stored, for want of better words ... an active one puts the EML light on instantly, a stored one means there is/has been a problem but its occurance is below a preset "threshold" so the EML is not on.

Code 19 can give this problem without putting the light on.

Just my opinion, but I would probably change the crank sensor anyway, even if no codes are present. It's about the only thing I can think of that matches your symptoms.

one end is at the top, back, right under the scuttle ( and awkward to get at) .. electric plug, the shape of which decides which one you need, the other end is down beside the oil filter.

have a read here .. should help

Change the crank sensor. It has given no signal in the past .. but is presently giving a signal... so is intermittent. Which is why is sometimes cuts out (no signal) and sometimes works (signal)

The crank sensor tells the system when to fire the spark.. no signal, no spark - no run .. :)

(pats self on back for long range diagnosis of code 19 - reward will be a cold beer tonight :)  )
