I mean the actual space, not the cover.

Is a boot on a saloon just the boot lid?
No, it's the space under the boot lid. :y

Tailgate because it is on the end of the car, boot is the internal part of the car with a tailgate(on estates) or boot LID (on saloons)
Is that pedantic enough ? :)

So it's still a boot - just a different shape with a different name to it's cover.

That's pedantic enough for me then. ;)

So why is the "luggage storage compartment" called a boot?
The Yanks call it a trunk, which seems easily explainable.
Same as a glove box - does anyone still wear driving gloves these days?
And another - wing mirrors! How many Omegas have them?
My "exterior mirrors" are on the doors!
But I digress...........................
