hi all, as above, i've recntly joined OOF and have my first question.....

have EML on and comes up with 2 fault codes, 1 of which is listed on the forum code reader pages and the other isn't could you please help?

codes are:

P0173 Fuel trim malfunction (Bank 2)
P1890 ??

plus, what actually is the " fuel trim malfunction (bank 2)"

Bank 2 is cylinders 2,4,6 (so passenger side in UK).

Fuel trim malfunction says that the ECU has attempted to adjust  the amount of fuel supplied to that bank (in an attempt to keep the lambda reading correct) and the adjustment is outside the normal range which indicates an underlying problem that needs fixing.

P0173 just says that it is out of limits and doesn't tell us the cause.
P1890 might give us a clue :-/
Possible causes might be:
- leaking exhaust manifold (lets air in & confuses lambda sensor)
- faulty lambda sensor
- misfire (but ECU should store a misfire code)
- faulty fuel injector
- faulty wiring

essentially the ECU cannot tell you the cause. It needs you (or an experienced auto technician) to solve the problem.
