hey guys, how do you blank the EGR valve as i can tell mine gets dirty and sticks at the worst moment e.g. when i need the kickdown and all i get is a very gentle push, ive heard the pipe can be blocked with a suitably sized coin and then bolt it back on where it connects to the EGR housing,

also ive read that the intake manifold gets very dirty inside but ive never cleaned this, is it the part of the engine with the 6 pipes that all come off of a piece of central ridged metal which is behind the EGR assembly?,

i assume i have to take the EGR totally off to be able to clean that area, is it worth doing and how hard is it to mess it up and do it wrong especially when it comes to putting it back together again

Ive totally removed the egr pipe as it was split anyway, i used the pipes cast flanges with pieces of steel plate, just cut the steel bits to shape & then sandwich it between the manifolds with the flanges & bolt them back on, also the manifold can get dirty inside so its best to clean the turbo pipes periodically so there isnt a build up of oil & crud.

ok its going well, a shiny penny fits perfectly in the EGR pipe however when it comes to the EGR assembly there are 4 bolts and the bottom two which are under the assembly are impossible to get to and take off, i dont have a tool to be able to do it, so to clean the intake manifold ive got a pipe cleaner thingy with a big bristley head and that is being moved inside the chamber with white spirit as the cleaning agent, lots of black is coming out but i cant do a good job without taking the EGR bit off and i cant do that coz of two stupid bolts, grrrrrrrrrr

I use a 3/8" square drive 10mm deep socket with a 6" extension bar and ratchet for this task.
 
Most of the oil mist seems to accumulate in the 'charge-air' pipe (embossed 'turbo diesel') across the front of the engine.
Mine gets cleaned-out at each 2.5k oil/filter-change.
Very little oil build-up when done at these intervals.

to what ive been told its only there for economy on a long run, although my chipped TD runs alot better with it blanked off.

I've done away with the EGR valve altogther. I removed the inlet manifold and bought a cheap bog brush from B&Q (its a perfect fit) and a big tin of Nitromors and scrubbed the inside of the inlet manifold, you'll be shocked at the amount of rubbish thats in there. I the replaced the EGR valve with this



There's no piston blocking the bore like there is in the EGR valve plus there's a place to bolts the pipe from the exhaust manifold.

I removed the pipe from the manifold altogether and fitted this to block the manifold



and replaced the plastic Turbo Intercooler bit which is weak and spews nasty sticky oil into the rad for the fan to blow all over your engine with these



The end result, minus the engine top cover which I have now refitted

hey guys, i was driving the car today after i tried to blank off the EGR at the assembly it was working nicely and there was no smell, however tonight there was a VERY strong smell of diesel coming into the car when the fans were on, rather nasty, im gonna try and tighten the bolts in the morning but if not i will remove the penny,

is there anything else that i can use, e.g. maybe a 10p coin coz its bigger, what do others use

a blankd egr will not cause diesel smaell in cabin, it would be smelling of exhaust if anything, check leakoff pipes first, when i blank mine i cut some sheet steel to shape and use that at both ends not just the exhaust end unless you have removed the egr pipe completely? see you used a coin? which has a high copper content wouldnt mind betting its blown through it!!! have a look if it has use steel, coke can last for about a day to give you some idea, a piece of steel plate last about 12000 miles!!

would this work for me do you think, the car has a BMW M51 engine so i think it should be fine but i dont know for sure as there are no measurements but i have asked the seller, it certainly looks to be the correct shape and it looks very similar to the blanking plate as seen in the excellent delete above ,

also do you think i should blank both ends or is one end enough, thanks guys

I don't think it will as the there is a raised shoulder on the EGR valve.

I made it with some steel from B&Q an angle grinder and a drill using the original as a template
