I posted this in general car chat instead of the Omega one so I'm posting it here to hopefully get a bigger audience :-)

Meanwhile matchless is going to look at an old one to see if he can see the seal number for me.

The oil seal is leaking on the output shaft of the steering box on my 1997 2.5v6. Anyone know the part number for a replacement seal set and where to get one from.

I have changed one of these, but can't find any reference to where I got the parts.

I can remember, however, that the steering box has to come out and be stripped to do it properly.

I was trying to save having to take the steering box out but it sounds as though I'd be better just replacing it.

Hi mate, had this problem last year. Firstly double check your part no!! I did'nt and ended up doing the job twice .
Secondly what ever you do don't rely on the haynes manual as you'll not get the box past the transmission bell housing (if you do I'd like to know how .
Once you've undone all the bolts,pipes etc support the engine with a trolley jack (and piece of wood) and undo the offside engine mount and raise the engine a few inches and it should come out easily .
Believe me it'll save you a lot of time and knuckle skin that way.
I do believe Haynes failed to mention that during their procedure there was no engine or trans in the vehicle at the time .

it will fit out without moving the engine - I've just done it.

It came upwards, and involved removal of the brake master cylinder and servo and the coolant pipe, but passed by the exhaust manifold ok. Still had the centre steering link on it as well.

I made a hybrid steering box using Carlton GSi internals in an Omega casing ( better feel, better gearing, etc. )

So does mine.
My Haynes book tells lots of wonderful stories but as advised in my 1st post "don't rely on" due to the instructions printed: Page 10.16, Section 24: Steering gear - removal and refitting, Models with 4-cylinder engines, para 1 - 22 where I can assure you there are no instructions or advisory notes regarding raising the engine. but who's nitpickin'

I don't mind nitpicking :-)

I didn't even look at the 4 cylinder section since mines 6 cylinder as I thought yours is. I see it was a 4 cylinder though so that's where the confusion is/was.
