Pedal test fault codes 10.1.7.10, and 10.1.7.3. Starter motor Knackered. Called an automotive guy with diagnostic (snap-on) kit. He could find no readings on his equipment. He got car started eventualy but was only on 3 cylinders but after a while it picked up to all 6. He seemed to hint that ECU could be failing, which as it is a "y" reg would not be worth repairing. Any suggestions please before I drive it to "webuyanycar.com" and accept the £490 valuation?? :-/

First suggestion is to ignore the automotive guy with the snap-on tool!

Sounds like a bit more LOGICAL investigation is required.

take no note of there valuation, they would probably mark you done another £490 when you arrive at there store.

Finding an automotive guy who's got a clue would be a good start.
P0170 Fuel trim malfunction (Bank 1)
P0173 Fuel trim malfunction (Bank 2)
Can't see how that points to a faulty ecu at all, not sure but I believe it is the common codes that appear on the DBW models when the pre cats lose some of their efficiency sure one of those owners without a throttle cable will clarify.
So what are the symptoms you have?

Why would 30 seconds with a diagnostic that is giving no codes - when the pedal test says there are some ... lead to an ECU fail diagnosis

0170 and 0173 codes bear no relation to starter motor problems at all

P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1)
P0173 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 2)

Which simply means it is over/underfuelling for some reason - needs sorting but not terminal

Starting poorly, then picking up can have several causes just one of which could be oil or water in the plug wells which is a known cause of problems on an Omega which makes the plugs short out,  Long term this causes coil pack problems, which leads to misfires.

Try unplugging the MAF and see how / if it runs.

The exhaust CAT codes are 0420/0430

Fuel trim malfunction, not fuel trim rich or lean which I would defo say is maf related. Fuel trim malfunction though not sure if that means maf or lambda? Also should mention possible air/vacuum leak.

Has anyone worked on the engine just prior to this happening.

Snap on kit? He obviously bought it to impress but is not wise enough to use it to its full advantage. Snap on kit is one of the best so he must have had more money than sense or meant to rely on it to cover his own knowledge ans skills shortcomings. 
Take it to someone who knows what they are about like DLK

 I wouldn't trust a generic reader too much, ESP when the pedal trick can read engine codes so easily.

As per others, I doubt very much that its the ECU failing.  What is under no doubt is the incompitence of the 'mechanic'.

Is this a recurring issue, or a one off?
