I have seriously considered a V8 ZT, they come with a 6 speed box and are apparently really good fun to drive. Just after Rover went under there were nearly new ones going for less than half list price, due to fears over warranties being worthless. Power output is a little disappointing though at 260 BHP, it's not bad for the kind of car it is, but for a modern V8 it's pretty poor. The same year BMW 545i was putting out around 340 BHP.

Still, a bit of a bargain considering the price they can be had for. I saw one pulling into a petrol station once with what looked like oil smoke coming from the 4 pipes :o at first I thought the engine must have blown but the guy just filled up, paid, and drove off as normal! Didn't sound anything unusual for a V8 so no idea what was going on there :-?

I guess that's the difference between a low-tech US engine and a high-tech european engine. I wonder which one's the sod to work on though?

A mate of mine's got one (had one a couple of years ago when I last saw him). They do sound lovely and it went nicely. I'm just not a fan of the retro styling though, TBH.

Did you know that the engine in the Astra is  from FIAT??[/quote]

Did you know that the engine in an alfa romeo is from fiat?
Well Fiat is the Mother corporate

True. When I hired a Mustang in the US (brand new one, not a proper Mustang unfortunately ;) ) I was amazed at how slow it felt. It really felt quite pedestrian, I've no idea how they manage it. To be fair it was a convertible and an automatic, I'm sure the 6-speed coupé would be a lot more lively, but those are almost impossible to find as rental cars in the US -- believe me I looked.

I think it would be slow regardless of transmission, just a lazy engine and poor power to weight.

Oh dear.  Why can't you all just be happy for him. He's just paid £00's to keep the Omega going, £00's more with the Alfa and now £00's more on an Astra.

Haven't you realised he just likes spending money  :)

Good on yer Grandad, and the Astra is far more fitting for running the grand kids round - but no more racing at the lights for you ;)

That new Astra is probably as punchy as the Omega off the lights...

True, but,

I recently drove a modern Turbo diesel commonrail injection vauxhall. And - I'd be prepared to put money on it that, up to 90mph, it's as fast (if not faster) than my V6 Omega!

If I've said it once, I've said it...........omegas, except in police guise, are not fast cars.

I have been quite impressed by the Astra H, not a huge fan of the interior but, they are one of the best built cars in thier class.

And the 1.6 16V engine is Gm, not Fiat......only one or two (not all i.e the 1.3CDTi) of the diesel engines were a joint development with Fiat at a time when Gm had almost a 40% stake in them!

Enjoy it, they are a good reliable everyday run about.

The figures speak for themself Jay. 0-60 in 8secs+ is not quick.

I can get my MV6 to 60 in 7 secs.... OK it's a 3.0 manual so quicker than most, but even at that it's not what I'd call fast. The biggest problem with Omegas is the crappy gear ratios, they're too wide for the peaky 24V engines to satisfy the motorway cruising ability (and improve fuel economy no doubt). A 6 speed box, with 6th gear being the equivalent of the old 5th and all other ratios closer and lower, would work wonders for the acceleration and drivability.

I think Vx designed the Omega as a sedate, luxury, cruiser .. not a hot-rod. If you want a race car .. buy an evolution 10  ??   :)
