MPG for old tired 2.5TD
« on: 17 July 2010, 19:20:58 »

I have a 2000, 2.5td estate, manual box, with 143,000 mls on the clock, and am getting 35 mpg from a full tank.

I was wondering if this is good, bad or normal for this model, age, etc.

Cheers,
BP.

Are there any simple mods that get better mpg (I am not a rocket racer)??

It depends on the type of driving you do. 35mpg around town is brilliant but if thats 35mpg on a run then its not too clever. My MID is showing 43.4mpg and thats a bit of town and long runs but I haven't done a full tank test yet. I believe chipping the ECU increases MPG but again I haven't had mine fitted yet.

The 35 mpg average is full tank - full tank, and includes all types of journey (short town, and long runs etc) generally >450 miles between fill-up.

That fig is normal, You can get great figures on the mid if you keep under 80, If you want economy buy a VAG car, I came from an 100 avant td once managed 800 mls on a tank , but since had 5 omegas, So ||||||

my old 2.5td did nothing like 35mpg, even on a run.  it was 120'000ish miles and automatic.  i would say it averaged in the region of 25mpg on a run and about 10 around town (according to the MID)  coming up the hill to my cottage, which is admittedly very steep, it did between 2 and 6mpg again according to the MID and how fast i was trying to get up the hill (6 mpg at about 20-25mph went down to 2 if i tried to get over 40mph)

Thats about right.  Chipping it tends to increase MPG by 10-15% in my experience (although it messes up the trip computer, which will read even higher)

Tired old 2.5!!! :o  Yours is a baby.

Mine is 1997, unchipped manual and has around 185k on the clock, it returns 35 locally with a light foot and over 46 mpg ( brim tested ) on a 500+ mile motorway run ...  with a medium heavy foot and over 80mph at times, retro fitted cruise on for 50% of the run.

If you do search on here for 2.5td fuel mpg or something like that you will find many old threads with some interesting stats.   :y

Thanks for the replies.  Good to know there's some life left in the old girl  :)

I have a GLS model so do not have an instant reading of mpg on the display, so I always reset the trip, and read full tank.

I have been thinking of adding the cruise control stalk as an upgrade.  Would adding cruise control change my average mpg for the better or worse??

Is the chip upgrade really worth the money??

As recently posted I got 44mpg on a recent run up the M1/A1
That's doing an average 70/75mph where possible with cruise set.
Could have easily got maybe 46-48mpg if you set cruise around 55-60mph, but who does that on the motorway  :-[
Local driving returns low 30's
