Cambelt on a V6
« on: 17 July 2010, 19:52:06 »

Just bought a mint 02 plate 2.6 V6 to replace my 'slightly worn' 2.5 The guy had owned it for 4 years and had only done 5000 miles! When he bought it the garage did the cambelt, tensioner, rollers etc..., evidence provided. He has kept it in his garage but serviced it every year so it has been cared for. Now I know that the interval is 40K or 4 years and on the time criteria I should change the timing belt etc...it but I would like to leave it a little while, any thoughts? The clock now reads 55K.

It's your call but, IMO, it's not worth the risk. About £200 for a cambelt kit change now (assuming you can't do the job yourself) or £600 minimum or so if it goes (again, assuming you can't do it yourself).

It's not unheard of for the tensioner to give up within a short time after the 40k interval is up ::) ::)

Do you like to gamble? Do you feel lucky?

Buy the DVD and do the work yourself and it will cost less than two tanks of fuel.

Pay one of the mobile mechanics who frequent the forum to do it for you and it won't cost much more.

Chances are it won't fail but it might  :'(

It's really a no-brainer Malcolm - for peace of mind, change it. :y :y

Bearing in mind that the law of sod frequently bites me I will do it soon! Thanks. ;)

Mine's going to need doing sometime in the next six months or so. Are there any within reach of North Surrey (Egham, to be precise) and what sorts of cost are we talking about? (My last one cost me over 400 sovs!)

Mine just cost me about £300 inc new water pump. Current Vauxhall dealer mechanic did it in my driveway about 15 miles from you. PM me if you want details.

My cam belt had done 70k and was over 5 years old when it was changed but it not worth the risk, its £200+ well spent.  :-[

Looks to me like there as many variations in the price charged, and what an acceptable price to charge is, as there are OOF contributors!!

So come on guys, three questions:
1) Is there anyone within a reasonable distance from me who can either do the job for me, or help me do the job?
2) How much should I expect to pay for this job?
3) In my youth I completely restored a Triumph TR5, how come just changing a set of plugs now scares the wossname out of me?!?!

Cheers,
Gaz

Lack of practice  ;)  ;)

PM Darth Loo-Knee &/or Elite Pete, I'm sure one of them would be able to sort it for you.  :y
