Recirculation not fuctioning
« on: 15 July 2010, 12:01:11 »

Hi, I recently noticed that the recirculation has stopped working. the last magor job done in the engine bay was the head gaskets at the back end of last year. Not really had cause to use it over the winter months. Only spotted it once i started needing the air con this summer. No audible change when pressing switch, nor any change in airflow noise.
I have tried resetting the servos but no change.
where is the best place to start please?
Thank you, Jez

Are you able to change the airflow direction?

Tnak you for responding Mark. Yes, all the direction buttons work ok, the recirc switch lights up and goes out when pressed as well.

Hmmm....which sudgests a solenoid or stuck flap type issue.

Its easy to see if you look in the passenger footwell as the flap is clearly visible (with the trim removed).

has the glove box been removed?

No, i have never reomved the glovebox. I had the stereo & facia plate off about 18 months ago to change the climate control bulbs, and it has worked ok upto earlier this year. I will have a hunt for the flap over the weekend.
Thanks

as he says - it's right there.

take the foam-backed pad out and look upwards.

the flap is a simple device, run from a vacuum motor. Vacuum supply into solenoid valve to motor - seemples.

actually, isn't the vacuum supply line the second one coming through the bulhhead at the heater connection ? it could be possible that the HBV work will have disturbed this.

Interesting....when youi turn the engine off do you get a set of 'dashes' appear in the temp display?

Yes but, I am assuming its working as the ventilation direction also works and this is also vac operated (heat setting is servo motor operated)  :y

ah yes - of course the second vac line is for the HBV control.

so, yo have a vacuum signal coming into the car from the engine bay ( from the vacuum reservoir ). This runs the heater distribution system, the recirculation and the HBV selection - all through electrical solenoids.

the solenoids for HBV and recirculation are screwed to the passenger side of the heater casing, roughly alongside the glove box.

Hello guys, finally had a chance to have a look at it today. Removed trim & could see flap. Pressed switch repeatedly and no sound or movement. For note when engine is switched off all heater control illumination just goes off, no dashes.

I had the left hand scuttle cover off earlier, both vac pipes are attached to the solenoid. Not exactly sure where the other ends are though so will have to romove both over the weekend and trace them back.
Am i right in thinking that the servo's only use air to move and are triggered electronically?
